i actually switched from beer to whiskey after becoming type 1 - for me, the whiskey seems a lot better on my sugars

PS. My favorite beer treats are many of the Sam Adams variations (especially 'Irish Red'), Grolsch, Fosters, and Guinness for full bodied beers - and Miller or Corona for a lite beer. Favorite foods with beer are pizza and Mexican/Texican foods.

Amen to the moderation. My humble understanding of the effect of alcohol on my system is this: 1) alcohol provides a high carbohydrate rush and then 2) blocks absorption of any further carbs, causing 3) a hypoglycemic condition, followed by 4) a hyperglycemic condition - in fewer words, the alcohol yo-yo.

As I age, I find that a single beer has the least amount of impact on my blood sugar. At this time, my body has no tolerance for Fruit alcohols, such as wine. Wine is a guaranteed yo-yo for me.

According to your description of this group you are saying the Beer has been the hardest habit to kick. When I did my Diabetes education I asked specifically about alcohol. They said, in moderation, it is not a bad thing, but to be careful with certain meds since alcohol can reduce blood sugar and you have to watch going too low. It has brought mine down very well and still enjoy brews all the time.

does it count if you make your own?! I've always had an appreciation for beer - but batching up the most delicious brown ale the world has ever known has certainly been a pleasure. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Hi, I do enjoy beer, my favorite is Sam Adams light but come summer time it's Sam Adams summer ale.
So far I have not had to adjust my insulin dose to account for the occasional beer.

My experience has been a little different.. I was diagnosed when I was 17. I immediately began drinking every form of alcohol I could find. I did so for three years. The terrible ups and downs, in those days the nutritionists, told diabetics do not drink anything.

When I was 20 I started dating my wife and she said no alcohol or no GF. Well I choose the GF and now for 31 years we have been married.

For years I was scared to death to drink anything, until a buddy of mine was diagnosed and said the nutrition people told him he could drink light beer in moderation. I checked into it and sure enough that was the thinking about 15 years ago. So I took a light beer and my goodness it was like drinking heaven after 15 years of nothing. Of course I went immediately to drunk, hard ot ebleive for a 300 LBS man, but I did.

Since that time I will occasionally drink a light beer and a Jameson's and water, the wife still hates it and sure enough a little glass gets me buzzing.

I have heard (also from a nutritionist) that pot is the better alternative for the diabetic. At the risk of diverting conversation has anyone else been told that? I don't smoke but I am curious. one can imagine that if beer is an issue at the house pot would be a throw your butt out, 31 years or not. Like i said I am just curious if nutritionists or or other professionals are telling others this same stuff.

Alright yall im going out to meet with my friend at Pizza Port tonight...one of the finest microbreweries in San Diego. When me and this guy get together, the pitchers flow all night. No worries, I'm not driving :)

I plan on keeping the blood sugar level too so wish me luck.

Oh and by the way the best beer ever is Chimay Grand Reserve.

Cheers!!
