I've Had Diabetes for Over 20yrs!

This group is for people out there who were born with or close to born with diabetes and have had it for a long time. I have had it for about 20yrs and it's very hard to find people and talk to others who are dealing with the same issues I am.

Hi everyone! I'm new to this site, but I think I'm getting the hang of it lol. I have had diabetes for a very long time, and I can't seem to find any other diabetics that are in the same place as I am dealing with the complications such as nerve damage.

Ii am a 90,young,old geezer, insulin-dependent since 1977, and a 'ROLE MODEL', who walk the walk, and talk the talk, reaching over 40.000 throughout the years. I have challenged all insulin-dependents, worldwide, to contribute to the RESTORATION OF THE BANTING HOMESTEAD, because if they are living a healthy lifestyle because of INSULIN, discovery of DRS.BANTING & BEST, July 30 1921, they should make a contribution. If your visiting TORONTO, arrangements can be made to visit the lab clarence.haynes@sympatico.ca My best advice is THE PERSON WHO KNOWS MORE ABOUT THEIR DIABETES, WILL LIVE THE LONGEST.

Hi everyone! Wow, great to find so many people living with the same "issues" as me. My mom thought things were a bit weird when the # of wet diapers increased - I was 16 months old in 1969 when she was told I had type 1. Odd one out at class parties and I'm sure you'd appreciate the "horror" stories the health care professionals told my mom and me in the 70s - for a while I didn't think I'd live past 30. Well, I did single shots, double shots, multiple injections and have been on the pump for 6 years now and my baby is starting kindergarten. A1Cs haven't been good for 3 yrs now and beginning to see some complications. Would love to chat with some veterans about getting back on track etc.

can I ask those who had diabetes during childhood:
how was their HbA1c during childhood.
at what age they were put on the pump, and did the pump improved their diabetes control as kids?
those who are on Lantus or levemir, how many units/kg/per day they are on ( of these long acting insulins)

the pump is recently given for free in some of big hospitals, not many kids are on the pump, many on lantus and aspart, and good control depends on patients and their families.During adolescence the diabetes control may deteriorate,it is a battle to contol diabetes for many patients here.

salam,
I treat children with diabetes,so I see them grow up with diabetes and know what they go through, medically and emotionally.
I am sure I will learn from you so I can help my patients more

25 years this month as a type I, diagnosed at age 17. Been on the pump for about seven years, currently the Medtronic Paradigm 722 without the CGMS.

Was born, three months preemie, but did not get the 'betes until the age of 28. I'm 52 now, so even though I was not BORN with this, I have had it over 20 years.

Hi, I was diagnosed in 1970 at 10 years old. So..I am coming up on 38 years in December. I have been very fortunate and have no complications at all. I have been pumping for 24 years and I truly think that is the reason I am so healthy today.

I have had Type I diabetes since 1975, so that would be 33, this must be the group for me!
