who we are

let's spread some love for our full selves. this group is for queer diabetics to share resources, information, and support with one another. maybe we can start talking about how homophobia and ableism intersect too. and once we start talking about it, maybe we can work on dismantling both forms of oppression. what do you say?

It seems so odd to me not telling people you are diabetic. Once you do that then you can get rid of some of the crazy misconceptions people get like " so you can't have salt?" "When your say your sugar is low you need insulin?" "I don't want to eat a lot of sugar so I won't get diabetes" I have heard variations of these all my life and enjoyed the opportunity to share some of the basics about diabetes to the clueless, which was pretty much the entire population. Even going to the hospital was, and is today scary, because so few nurses and doctors understand type 1 diabetes control. Once someone knows a little about the disease they can be helpful in a crisis. They may be the only person around to tell the paramedics your not drunk but you are a diabetic. Whew!! That was a soap box standing huh? I guess I have some strong feelings about not being up front about serious health issues. Now coming out as gay.... that was tough!! I'm 44 years old. My first role model was Billy Jean King. Things are a little different now. Somehow just as scary.

Hi everyone! Soon to be pumper from South Africa here. Sounds like there are some interesting discussions in here - although the group seems kind of quiet. Hoping to stir things up! -light-
