My 8 year old niece Kayla, she was diagnosed 1 year ago. Her parents had to call 911 because her blood levels had dropped too low. Kayla is very amazing and she has inspired so many with her story. She is my role model.

Good and bad role models...
The good role model was the orthopaedist I had as a child. He lived with diabetes for many years, kept up his practice, kept up with the latest research... In short, someone who was able to lead an ordinary, productive life with diabetes.
The bad role model was my stepmother's father. By the time I'd met him, he'd already lost one leg to diabetes, and he let that loss cripple him mentally. He did not pay attention to self care, lost the other leg piece by painful piece, and eventually died from complications of diabetes.
Now, eventually, my orthopaedist did lose one, then the other, leg to diabetes... when he was in his 80's. And from what I understand, he was still practicing until he lost the second leg. But what I saw in him was someone who took care of himself medically and did not let diabetes get the better of him. I found out many years later that he lived until the age of 95. I don't think my stepmother's father made it much past 70.
So, I knew what could happen if I did, or did not, take care of myself... and that allowed me to get serious about this condition.
And I've learned that the "bad" role models teach us as much as the "good" ones.
