Haven't posted in awhile. School stuff has kept me really busy. (yay, for a few weeks of sanity) Celebrated D-day number 10 on December 10. Of course, it was a final exams day so I really didn't paint the town red but I savored the "treat" I'd gotten for myself(a Wendy's Frostie and chicken salad). I don't feel like a newbie at all now, there's something about putting your diabetes in the double digits. Status quo here. I am seeing a nephrologist on a regular basis, getting magnesium infusions three times a week but hoping to cut down on that soon. I may have to get a port surgically implanted but the meds(amiloride) is supposed to cut down on the wasting and I am really hoping my veins hold out. Thank you guys for your thoughts and prayers.

My endo picks up the phone, presses a button, and talks to the lab. "I'd like Heidi X's a1c, please." Puts it down. "It's gone up." Delightful, what's the damage? 9.1 Ugh.Double Ugh. Triple Ugh. Couple of things have happened since last time I posted. Went to Hopkins Sat. night, oh joy it took 6 grams of mag. to take it up to 2.6. But the docs were excellent, its just the stupid system. They can only treat you on an emergency patient. And yesterday. PCP doc calls, mag is 0.9. I feel like absolute crud and despite the fact she's arranged to have me see a neph. the following morning I know I will not survive. Chest pain, dizzy, weak. Go to ER and my potassium is low too. The result of the STAT bloodwork is in... Magnesium, 1.2. I have a couple of choices here. Double my magnesium doses to 1600 mg/day (orally).See if that causes dierrea. If it doesn't, I might maintain the level over the weekend. Do nothing, take what I have been taking + let it reach critical sometime late tomorrow night. If it causes dierrea, that will invoke greater magnesium loss + I'll be up the creek again. There has to be a better system then visiting the ER on a twice a week basis. My… Continue
