Intro

I am currently living in Budapest, Hungary and working on my phd in political science (comparing the effects of welfares states on poverty in Centeral and Eastern Europe). I am originally from the Detroit area, but my husband is from Hungary. I have type 1 diabetes, diagnosed in 2003 (at the age of 21). I use the Minimed Paradigm insulin pump (used to use Cozmo 1800). After a year with A1c's under 7, I am now struggling to manage my blood sugars. Pregnancy is something that we would like to consider in the near future... so actually under 6 is the goal, but one step at a time! Glad to have found this community!

A doctorate in Political Science of Eastern Europe ... wow, how fascinating! I have traveled but mostly in Asia and S. America (before we considered kids), we had considered Romania, but that was the year they closed to international adoptions, in fact.

My girlfriend has had type 1 since she was 3, she is 30 now. She's well able to look after herself and when I told her I joined this forum she told me to unsubscribe because I'll only drive myself insane when I start to actually realise the extent of her problem!

I do, Diabetes.

Giving (a little) hope for a cure…

Exciting news that will encourage stem cell research in the USA! Let’s hope that the possibility of government funding for stem cell research will bring us steps closer to a cure… Wouldn’t it be GREAT “to spur insulin production and spare a child from a lifetime of needles…” (and to spare adults too!!). I’m realistic and not expecting [...]

Thank you Dr. Banting and Best!!

For those of us who are dependent on insulin, we can thank our lives to Dr. Frederick Banting and Charles Best who discovered insulin in 1921. Their discovery truly changed the future of many people living with diabetes (more specifically, gave them a future). There is a good summary of the discovery of insulin here. When [...]

World Diabetes Day: Lighting Budapest up in blue!

More reflections on World Diabetes Day to come soon, but I leave you with a few images from my corner of the world– Budapest, Hungary (I guess that this is the first time that I mention where I live on this blog!!). For WORLD Diabetes Day, the Liberty Lady who looks over the Danube decided [...]

Sweating the small stuff…

Can you see the kink at the end of this cannula? Yeah, me neither. It’s hardly detectable, but it is there. The kink in the last millimeter of this infusion set really put a kink in my day. Last week, I started on the Minimed Paradigm 722 after four years on the Cozmo (long story short: I [...]

Forgetfulness + diabetes = ???

It’s been a busy month. Somehow once I get past a certain point of “overwhelmed”, I become very forgetful. In the last week, I have been SO forgetful: forgetting to do things for work, forgetting where I need to be, forgetting what I was thinking about a minute ago. So I keep lists, set reminders, [...]

This discussion raised a lot of emotions, but I think ended up being very educational in the end. If you are looking for a meaningful discussion on this topic, I encourage you to read through the 6 (!) pages of comments (not only the initial quest...
I have tested strongly positive for antibodies related to Hashimoto's (I think the upper bound was 60 and my reading was 600). But my TSH is still within the lab defined value of "normal" (around 2.5-3.5). So I am not yet treating it. Almost ever...
I found the page of the member that I was thinking about. It's Lindsey and here is her blog post about this topic. I'm sure that she would love to hear from you!!!
Hi Jade, reading your story above told me that you know very well how to manage your diabetes. You tested and did everything right. That happens to me often when I overestimate the carbs in my meal. I add a snack after dinner and then everything i...
I like it! Though I definitely test to live, I'm not sure that I live to test ;)
I have the Frio pump pack. It is very effective (I use the FRIO products a lot), but it is quite big. When you get it, you will see that there is a beads/gel pack (which is the part that you need to soak in water) and an outer case. If you just u...
