My Other Blog

This is the one about my new BFF.

So I’m totally besties with Kevin Spacey. As you know, I was in New Orleans last weekend, and I had a kind of run-in with Usual Suspects/American Beauty/LA Confidential actor Kevin Spacey…or K-Space as I now call him. It started when we went to breakfast at The Alpine Bistro on Saturday.  When we walked in, I instantly [...]

This is the one with NOLA photos.

I’m posting here some photographs from my New Orleans trip I took this past weekend.  In the next couple of days I’ll update y’all on some of the fun stories that happened (including my 2 breakfasts with Kevin Spacey). Bodies can’t be burried here because the city is under sea level. If you were to [...]

Traveling While Diabetic...

Okay, so I don't do as much traveling as I wish I could. And this weekend I'm taking a mini-vacay to New Orleans. I've never done the whole airplane thing while carrying insulin and needles. And was wondering if any of you have any suggestions.

PS: Follow me on Twitter if you want to see some pictures of my trip as they happen. http://www.twitter.com/MrMikeLawson

Happy To Be Uninsured

I was standing in what appeared to be a non-moving pharmacy line. The elderly gentleman picking up his medications was confused about the prices being charged, and demanded an explanation. "I"ve been taking these same pills for 10 years," he said. "Why does it suddenly cost more?"

I hate this.

To make matters worse, the lady in front of me is talking on her cell phone. The guy in front of her is getting visibly grumpy. The pharmacy employee is getting upset. And right then, after waiting in th… Continue

Help Me: Do I need a new doctor?

I've got a dilemma, and I was hoping some of you can help me.

Since my DKA in May, I've been seeing a doctor that I randomly found by flipping though my insurance provider's list of approved doctors. I made my first appointment and went in and told him my whole story.

I won't bore you with my back-story, but the gist is that my insurance just recently started covering Diabetes care after a long waiting-period because of a "pre-existing condition." Dumb.

So the Doctor comes in and is a really… Continue

A good reason to tell EVERYONE you have Diabetes

I remember a couple of discussions in the past here on TuDiabetes about revealing to your co-workers that you have Diabetes. I know that most of us have told the people that we work with...but if you are not sure if you should let everyone know, let me tell you a story:

I run a technology lab here in Phoenix for kids (ages 5 through 18). For the past few weeks one of the teens that comes to my program was carrying around a little stuffed pig. It was a really cheap little pig...like something wo… Continue

Doing it in public

This afternoon I was at lunch with the boyfriend, and I whipped out my insulin and injected right there at the table. I'm getting more comfortable injecting and testing in public. I think most people know that when you're sticking a syringe in your tummy it's pretty innocent.

So we are sitting at the table this afternoon and I inject really quickly and that's that.

"You know," Dan said, "when you inject in public you do it a lot quicker."

"Really?" I said, thinking about this observation.

"Y… Continue

its funny where we put our stash. I carry my laptop in a backpack and I have my pills in the front pocket of the backpack. When I walk, the pills make that shaking sound that pill bottles make so every morning on my way to my desk I sound like a r...
I was uninsured for a while. I had never paid full price for insulin before. When I got to the cash register and was told that 1 bottle was over $100, I was tempted to grab the box and run out the door yelling, "You'll never get me!!!" If you get...
We just went through a recent discussion of flying with diabetes in the US, Flying with Diabetes about a week ago. in Tu Diabetes.
My insurance plan sucks! Though it covered my insulin pump after a hefty co-pay, I pay $40/Humalog.

Happy to make it official over here too :) getting a pump if endo is labeling for type 2 (or are you considered 1.5? if so dr can write type 1 on rx) can be difficult but not impossible...you will have to fight for it through a series of appeals no doubt.....do you know your c-peptide yet?

As a matter of fact, and I'm not pushing politics here, but there's a nation wide grassroots coalition that the Pres. has formed to hear the horror stories about healthcare night mares, for healthcare reform. I went to the first meeting yesterday, and if you want to be involved with a passionate cause, honey there is one!!! The Pres. reads 10 stories a night from his websights then contacts those people to talk about the situation. healthreform.gov is one place, or, just go to his MySpace page.
It doesn't sound like alot, but with 46 million uninsured people in this country, that's a pretty good sized army, if enough people are mobilized, we can get this changed. I believe it with my whole heart, and I've never been political before. The one thing Prez O has done that singularly made me believe him, was when he reversed Bush's bill to stop funding for research and preservation of the Polar Bear. They'll soon be extinct. After that, the reverse on the ban of stem cell research, it's almost in reach, and hundreds of wretched diseases will be history!!
Ok, off my soap box!!
