My son took his off everytime he goes to the bathroom. One doesn't really stay in there for an hour - is it worth the risk?

try telling a 13 year old not to eat any sweet - remember we're only human!! That's why I'm grateful for the pump - still think it's the best option for a 13year old. Save us lots of headaches....
I do talk about short acting insulin - like novorapid, novolog or humolog though

Joanie said… - hi there! Yes puberty was really rough for my control but it was very different 15 years ago. Back then I was on two shots a day and had no carb or correction ratios, pumps were also only used on select people over age 18. My doctors pretty much told me to do my best through puberty but seemed to almost expect failure, it was a mess. I didn't really hit me until mid high school that I really realized what I was dealing with. before then I would sometimes take my insulin late, or early, not eat, eat too much, which I think is similar to not bolusing now a days. I was just not there mentally or emotionally, my mind was elsewhere and I think that is relatively normal for children at that age. I just loosely did what i was told (the bare minimum at that) and went along in life almost ignoring diabetes (my A1c still usually stayed in the mid 7% range, but to be at 7 I must have fluctuated a lot because I was not in that tight of control). Finally in college I started to REALLY shape up and take full responsibility. I think it happens much sooner for most people though. I think that the pump will help him immensely if he isn't already on one.
Overall I would say do your best, and make sure he knows that it's okay to not be perfect. I mean make sure he REALLY knows that. I think one of the main reasons kids at that age ignore it is because they finally comprehend the damage it can do later in life and that scares the crud out of them. Let him know, and really believe, that this isn't a game of all or nothing, he doesn't have to give up because he makes mistakes sometimes, and he isn't 'doomed'. Just take it day by day, and accept your imperfections. :)

- long before i had diabetes, i had hepatitis and i was taking medicine for the hepatitis whcih the meds cured and the meds i was taking killed my liver so that's how i got diabetes.

Daniel said… - HEY! I had rapid weigh loss, I weighed 150, and in a few short weeks weighed 130. I drank seemingly gallons of water, but probably 1 a day. REALLY dry mouth! Itchy skin, creaky joints... I think that sending letters out to doctors and Insulet might help get the omnipod out there! I really love it, and I love how I can have control, and its "not even there". I see you already have a Medtronic pump? I tried that pump in the CDE's office, and I couldn't easily figure it out for myself, but the omnipod was really easy, especially changing basal rates. If you have ANY questions about it, don't hesitate to ask! thank you :)

Ons is ook gelukkig dat ons medies vir al sy pomp se benodighede betaal, hulle lewer dit elke maand by ons huis af. Dit is vir my vreeslik sleg dat alles wat gepaard gaan met diabetes so verskriklik duur is! Nie net die medisyne nie maar ook diabetiese kos soorte ens.

Glucose meter - small town
I was so disgusted with this town on Sunday, Jan-Hendrik went with his sister (it was het birthday) and 10 other friends to a guest farm to picnic for the day. Lot's of swimming and lots of sun. When he swim he normally take of his pump for that period. So lot's of periods without a pump - I knew his bs was going to be wacky that night.

No No NO
HbA1c 9.7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's been in the 9's for over a year now! What do we do wrong?? It's times like this when I realize I should have a new look to our perspective of diabetes and reevluate everything. Jan-Hendrik seems so oblivious to the fact that he should keep his Bg lower. If I does'nt nag him he just don't care! Eats what he likes whenever he likes, which can be ok if he just remember to bolus. By the time I nag him to test his again his Bg's are up - "Oh I forgot to bolus!"
