Well said. I never thought about how much I think about diabetes during the average day. I'm so used to it that it usually doesn't even register. Managing diabetes has become easier, but diabetes is always something I have to consider when making ...

So true. Enjoyed your post very much--thanks! Not only did I smile at how you beautifully summed up the internal dialogue of our days, but yours is a great statement to share with my non-diabetic loved ones to help them understand how all-consumin...

Wow Riva - awesome post - you had me riveted in my seat. I missed out on Michael Weiss's conference (didn't we both need a twin/triplet of ourselves to attend everything?). I have to admit, I'm like you, never think of the #2, for us, being long t...

Great post, Riva. I was trying to explain this the other day and not really expressing it well. Your blog has made me wonder if the autonomic nervous system in non-diabetics works this hard without our knowing it. Fair Winds, Mike

The Hours My Head Lives in Diabetes-Land

If I think about it, most mornings when the weather isn't obvious, I stand at my living room window while my oatmeal is simmering on the stove, squinting through the trees outside to see if it's raining or not. When the TV news on in the background announces the weather, I pay attention. Well, sort of. It seems to go in one ear and out the other as I'm up and down, in and out of the kitchen stirring, testing my blood sugar, shooting up my long-acting and rapid-acting insulin, trying to think bac… Continue

2,000 Amazing Book Signings

With little fanfare, my husband turned to me about two months ago and said, "Wouldn't it be something if we gave away your books to the speakers and member nations who'll be at the International Diabetes Conference this year? After I rolled my eyes I said laughingly, "It sure would." And, I'm here to tell you it was!

1,000 copies of "50 Diabetes Myths That Can Ruin Your Life and the 50 Diabetes Truths That Can Save It" and 1,000 copies of "The ABCs of Loving Yourself with Diabetes" made their w… Continue

The Secret - We Create What We Expect

I've been reading back through my own posts on my own blog, http://www.diabetesstories.com/stories_blog/, and enjoying them so much I'm going to post a few here from time to time because they're timeless and relevant. I hope you get something out of them too. So here's one from December 2007.

Staring out the staff lounge window at the Cumberland Hospital in Fort Greene Brooklyn, just outside the auditorium where I am going to speak, I watch the traffic move along the Brooklyn Queens Expressway.… Continue

The Exhaustion of Chronic Illness, or When Bad Things Happen to Good People

I've generally been a "good" person. I try to do those ten things on Dalai Lama's list. You know, be kind, not hurt others, let people know you love them, hear a tree when it's falling even if you're not there.

In addition, there are my hard-wired Virgoan traits: I'm responsible, loyal, a good friend and hard worker.

When I got diabetes at 18, after the "Why me?" stage passed, and the denial stage passed, I got back up on my feet and learned to manage this damn illness. Not that it was easy or… Continue

You'd be shocked to know how many diabetes myths you may believe

One of the things I do is speak to fellow patients to help educate them about taking care of their diabetes. Often I'll talk to a support group or at a health fair. I'm not a medical person but a peer-mentor who's been trained to deliver a few educational programs and I have become extremely knowledgeable due to writing a book that just came out about diabetes myths.

I just returned today from Worcester, Massachusettes where I spoke to a group of about 100 patients about a lot of confusion arou… Continue

Hi Riva, I saw Dr. Carol Levy at Weill-Cornell. Her contact info, insurance accepted, etc. can be found here: http://www.weillcornell.org/physician/cjlevy/index.html.

Let me know if you end up deciding to see her!

I'm clueless- it is disposable and "green." Which would either make it very reasonable, OR very expensive! Plus some insurance companies might consider it experimental and opt not to pay for it. We'll find out on Tuesday!
