I have an UNUSED accu-ckek aviva meter with strips...#10 & #50 count strips. The strips expire 8/2009 and 9/2009. I would like to ship this off to someone who can really use it. The meter box has been opened, but like I said, the meter itself has ...

the questions in Wisconsin are a lot more vague.. it pretty much boils down to "have you suffered an altered state of conciseness in the last 6 months" Mearly going low is not the threshold, passing out and needing paramedics is. Personally, if t...

Wow Melissa this same thing happened to me when I renewed my license last July! I was whats up with this? So if I get in trouble it's her fault? I'm sayin yes!

I know that in British Columbia you are required to disclose diabetes. You have to have what they call a "driver's medical exam" before you can even get your learner's licence. My doctor even took it out of my hands when I turned 16 and called the...

For years, I never checked mine before driving. I had one REALLY bad experience where I was so lucky not to have hurt others or myself and realised it's just NOT WORTH the risk. I now check them every time I drive even if it is 3 or 4 times a day....

In my country (Belgium)it is a must by law to say you have diabetic illness. The only thing I have to do is every five years, the specialist fills up a paper and then I go to the cityhall to confirm I can drive again for five years, and I get a ne...

I'm not trying to be judgemental. I'm sincerly worried about him. He and my older son are good friends. I'm actually friends with his mother, but like I said do not want to overstep my bounds with them. It's just a frustrating situation to be in.

Tonyia, my dear---I know it's probably a humongous drive, but I wanted you to know that I'm organizing the first ever Portland TuD Meet-up for Aug 29 or 30. I would love to meet you and Morgan and your family if you feel up to the drive! Visit the Northwest group and follow the Portland Meet-up discussion for details. I'm hoping for a picnic in one of our lovely parks.....I hope this finds you all well!...Judith

Thanks for those prayers! These next few days are going to be tough; until he realizes I mean business.

Thanks Tonyia - Brian and I have had a rough couple of days. I used some of that tough love. I took away his XBOX 360 and computer privileges until he can show me that he is doing what he must do each day. He got real angry, then nasty, and finally sarcastic. The final result is that he checked his blood sugar and took his insulin like he should. I'm just so tired of being the bad guy - the tears come all the time.

Thanks! I hope so too. I don't have a "real life" support system, so I think it will help to talk to some fellow diabetics. I think there are some things that only we can understand about each other...

Thank you, Tonyia! The support we have received from this group since diagnosis in Sept. has been truely amazing!

Tonyia, thanks for asking,
He played in a youth league so it has started and already ended. We found that basketball at least for him didn't drop his blood sugar as much as football; and in fact we discovered that with basketball his sugars went up after a game but only after a game not practice: when we spoke to our CDE about this she indicated that competition will raise blood sugars.Overall things went very well, he had a coach who was very interested in learning about diabetes and we had an opportunity to do some education. He enjoyed basketball; since he is only 7 his favorite sport is the one he is currently playing. Right now we are in an "off season" time of year so his only activity right now is the Wii they got for Christmas so I am sure this inactivity will carry it's own challenges. Next season: soccer.
How is your son? He is probably right in the middle of his basketball season.

No, he doesn't have his permit yet. He'll be 16 in March. The doctor has already said he has to manage better, before she'lll sign off on his driving. Brian and I were just talking about that very thing a couple of minutes ago. I asked him what could he do to manage better. Him and I both know that he knows, I don't know what its going to take.

You would think he would listen

to his wise, sage infinitely smart mother. : P Morgan's blood sugar continued to rise after basketball practice last night. By the time he went to bed at 9pm, he was 500+ with a ton of active insulin. I asked him if his site had failed? "no I just changed it Sunday" He said with a lot of attitude. So I check him at 10 and he had come down some, but decided to check again at 11:30. It is always nice to have a welcoming 'HI' at that time of night. I knew his site had failed, but waking him to do a… Continue

Sports and working with coaches

When it comes to Morgan's diabetes, I do tend to be the mama bear and 'bite first and ask questions later'. After the episode with the basketball coaches they were very much intimidated by me and how involved I am with Morgan's diabetes care. We did manage to work through the inevitable tension the freshman coach had with me. I let him know that we are both on the same team, and we needed to let Morgan know that we were ALL on the same page, working together. I attended the nurses' glucagon trai… Continue

"take your medicine before practice

so it doesn't interrupt our practice."

Now why the hell didn't I think of that? I usually don't have to deal with stupid, stupid comments from ignorant people, but this comment is from someone who is going to be Morgan's basketball coach.

Basketball tryouts started this past Monday. Morgan came out of it with a glucose of over 400. Not good. He can't function well when over 250 and it showed. When I got there to pick him up he was uncoordinated, breathing hard and just didn't look well. I spok… Continue

Tragedy

As the mom of a teenager with type 1 this story really upset me. We have sent our son to diabetes camp and to basketball camp...all within a 6 hour drive from home and have known that he was safe. I haven't fully read the Hill's proposed bill and I am not one to 'jump on the bandwagon' regarding such things, but I will definately check it out. It sounds like this People to People group really needs to be held accountable for their actions (or lack there of).

When I Move Out

(This is a copied post from my blog.)

It has been nearly 28 months since Morgan's diagnosis of diabetes.

I will not even begin to count the number of finger sticks he has had in order to check his blood sugar levels. I will not even begin to count the number of injections/infusion sets he has had in the past 28 months.

I could, probably, count the numbe
