Suggested guidelines for starting a support group sucessfully.

What do you want out of the group? What do you want to avoid? How do you want the group to operate-no leader, rotating leaders? professional facilitators?,what guidelines for discussion are important to you? what are you willing to do to help the group function? There should be a limit set for the organizational discussion, at least half of the meeting should be devoted to discussing living with diabetes. AMIGO clarence.haynes@sympatico.ca

Hi, I have statred today based on your wisedom. I lost my father 20 years ago and lost my role model. He was a school principal who strapped children at school and beat his 3 at home. I thought I would never miss him, and I do miss a small part of him. Sounds like your father really understands things, and could put them into perspective. My 3 wee ones are going to be better than the previous generation of men because of my doings, they will not live in a mantion as I did groing up but their home is full of love---that is a structure that will stand alone even if divided. I know that diabetes (a terminal illness or chronic disease) will not get them as it has me. (all 3 of my children are iddm). My mom has been iddm for 47 years, dateing back to the 60's when no such things were around as glucometers and anything but pig and cow insulin. She has no complications of diabetes at all. FIGURE THAT OUT!!!!! It has been many years since I have met an inspiration as you Clarence. Many thanks for your input and interest. P.S. Ihave only been able to use my computer since the cnib have donated hardware and software to allow me to re-communicte to the outside world but they can not help me spell any better LOL>!!!!!!!

You seem too cool for language! I HATE this BS called IDDM and have so for years. I lost the feelings in my legs, have hypertension and in the last few months since April I became blinde. I have diabetic retinopathy and macheral edema, I trusted Dr. Hillson in Orillia to fix these problems and went from 20/40 vision to less than 20/200 in both eyes, apparently due to side effects of laser surgery. Now he guesses I need a retinal specialist. That is my guess too. Can not work or drive. What is next? Tomorrow only knows. I am a Grad. of the U.O.T. and do not know where to turn. The CNIB only helps you cope, not fix things. Thankyou for your time and interest. If I did not have a loveing wife and three little boys I would invite you to my funeral.

Clarence: Thanks for your note. I'd be pleased to help you as time permits. As you can tell, my dance card is pretty full during the business day, so I often don't spend much time on the web then, and sometimes, I'm a bit weary of being in front of a screen all day, so I don't open my laptop at night! This site looks to be very good, so I might need to budget some time on a regular basis to respond, comment, post, etc. Kudos to you for succeeding over diabetes and contributing back so much. Regards, gbt

HI Clarence, I've put together a pretty good team for the tiny town where I live. I do get checked every mo. by a family doctory (no Endo here) not only for diabetes but for another chronic health issue. Since I went on a insulin pump in July, I can download all my pump data and he can see every carb I ate, every BG I had and every drop of insulin that entered my body. He scans it in on his system and now he has a great record. I also found a Podiatrist a couple of months ago as I had to have my dead foot worked on. I do see an Endo in Houston occasionally and with my pump, I have 24 hr access to a CDE for any questions of diet, pump, insulin, etc. It's much better now. You must have read my comment about first being diagnosed and sent home with an injection kt. No education, nothing. It was bad but I found all that for myself in time. It first took coming out of denial about how bad my disease was. Thanks for spreading the word about our disease and the care of it.
