Melitta, you can ask Animas for a travel pump before you go, so you have a backup with you just in case. I have done this the past couple of summers when I travel to China, but have never needed it. Animas even pays for the shipping back to them w...

Ecstatic!

Today I was completely shocked but ecstatic to receive a letter in the mail from my insurance, Regence BlueShield, stating that they had authorized my new Dex! I was so shocked because it was just about 1.5 years ago that they denied me for the Seven. I got one anyway, and have been paying out of pocket every time, so I wasn't always wearing it continuously. I had called Dex to ask them about an upgrade from my Seven to the new Seven Plus (which I didn't qualify for), and the rep told me that my… Continue

Oops!

What was I thinking? Two days ago I forgot to celebrate my 17 years of being a diabetic! Guess I missed out on my opportunity to eat cake:) Actually what I should be doing is celebrating that I have lived the last 17 years healthy and complication free, and plan on doing so for many years to come. The fact that I forgot it was my diagnosis day is a good thing, meaning I don't obsess over my diagnosis nor does it define who I am. So join me in toasting the next 17 healthy years!

Annoying Phone Survey....

So last week I received a letter from the Health Dept. of the State of Washington stating my phone number had been randomly selected for a survey, and that I should expect a call within a week. So last night I spent about 20 minutes on the phone answering some nice man's questions. One of the questions was whether or not a doctor had ever told me I had diabetes. The next question was if I had ever had to take insulin. The thing that really annoyed me was that other than asking me if I had pregna… Continue

Glad to be home....

I'm glad to be home, but had a wonderful experience in China. It is such a blessing to bring smiles to the children's faces. I'm happy to say my blood sugars were great, and I loved traveling with Louise (my Dexcom). This was my first big trip with her, and it was so nice to be able to check it frequently. I checked her when I was on top of the Great Wall, and after viewing the steep downward trend, I decided to eat a snack and turn off my basal (I had already put it down to 1/2). I should've ke… Continue

China here I come....

So this Thursday I am heading back for my 4th trip to China, my second to work in an orphanage. However, this time I am heading off with two great tips I learned here since joining tudiabetes. I have been on a pump for 12 years now, but from this site I learned I can request a loaner pump from Animas, which I did. I feel much more at ease knowing I have a backup with me:) The other thing I learned about is the frio wallet to keep my insulin cool. In the past… Continue

Hi Toni, If you don't mind me asking, what is the name of your Endo at UW? I worked for UWMC for a number of years and am familiar with a lot of the medical staff. I am currently looking for a new endo since I haven't quite found the quality I became used to since my endo at VMMC retired. Thank you for your info!! Hope your week starts out well!

Hey Toni.....Ya the only issue is that my endo is thru Kaiser.......He is very supportive and says that I have been doing a great job and if it isn't broke don't fix it......I am going to keep bugging them and see what I can come up with.....

Have a great day.....

That is too funny.....I am originally from Washington and a Husky.......I grew up in Port Angeles.......I am doing pretty good managing.......Just been a learning curve for me......I really am interested in the pump but not sure if Kaiser wants that to happen.......I think I am going to try and talk them into it.......The one thing I haven't been able to figure out yet tho is working out......I always seem to go low when I workout......Who knows......

Hi Toni. Nice to hear from you. I'm doing a half marathon in SF in October, which I'm looking forward to. Sounds like you've also got an active lifestyle, and similarly have to deal with basal changes and so forth. Great to find like-minded people in this community!! :)

Hi Toni, thanks for the message and letting me know about the NW Group! (I joined it by the way ;) ) I've been going to Virginia Mason for my care for the past 14 years. They have been absolutely wonderful in my diabetes care, although my favorite Dr. retired a few years ago, so I have yet to find an endo there like as much as him!! Where do you go?

Maybe your nieces know my sister, Senora Slangan (used to be Wendling). She has taught Spanish there for 15 yrs or so. I would love to come to Judith's thing, but my daughter has her TaeKwon- Do Campout. They have seminars for the students all weekend and I get to bring a pile of books and do yoga on the beach! My husband hates to camp, so it has turned into our "Girl's Weekend". I would love to meet other healthy diabetics who actually CARE about their health. 95% of my patients are non-compliant and so they usually have poor outcomes. It has been nice to "meet" folks with a more proactive attitude. I hear there is some great paddling in your neck of the woods! (I love to kayak!) :-)

Toni, Thanks for the welcome. It's great to find a place where people can relate to what is going on. I go the everett clinic for my endo and diabetes educator. Pretty happy with their support so far. It is a bit overwhelming and a lot to get used to.
