Hi Jenny,

Your website is AMAZING and has been so very helpful. While screening for a clinical trial, I had my A1C tested only a month after diagnosis and I'm happy to report that, largely thanks to your "eat to your meter" advice, my A1C dropped from 9.3% to 6.7%.

My numbers recently have been even better, averaging in the low 90s two hours after meals. Hopefully at my next doctor's visit, I'll be joining the 5% club. ^^

Hi Jenny,
Thanks for all of your input on the sweeteners.

A couple things.

The fact that you may be getting the munchies after eating mints or gum with the xylitol my not be caused by the xylitol at all.
As it turns out, many people give records of getting hungry after candy, diabetic or non-diabetic.
The reason is usually attributed to the fact that you salivate when you chew or suck on candy. This act triggers a digestive response and tells your stomach to expect food soon. If it does not get it, soon, you get hungry feeling.

I have heard the same info on Maltitol that you told me. It is exactly as you said. There are varying results for different people, and those results depend on body chemistry.
I think I have just been trying to find something that works, and gives as little kick back as possible. Maybe this will work well for a few people, if it does I am glad for it.
From what I have heard xylitol is actually quite good, but it is not used as widely as other sweeteners so the effects get less attention.

I totally get your point about just using regular sugar and watching intake. Being non-diabetic, looking from the outside, it seems like some things would be a lot easier if you could just pick up something off the shelf that you know and trust.
Thanks for your input.

Thanks for your advice! I value your experience and studies tremendously. I will continue to believe my meter and wait for the next A1c, the doc also recommended a furctosomine test to check more current BG values. I am glad to hear how well you are doing with this condition. It is so encouraging to see so many on this site doing well.

Maybe I should try to go to a known diabetes center for a second opinion. Maybe they would put me on insulin instead of waiting to get worse and go on Januvia. Currently I am not on any meds...just diet and exercise, with normal BMI etc... Always been active and somewhat healthy dieter. (occasional sweet binges before diagnosis).

Thanks Jenny!! Your awesome.

Hi Jenny! I am baffled and wondered if you had input! I have T 1.5 we think, and I've read your awesome book, and Dr. Bernstein's two books. I believe in these philosophies and they have been working on my daily glucose #'s. I have a few more carbs maybe 20 at meals and 15 at snacks I am also nursing a baby. QUESTION. Three months ago I had 5.9 HbA1c and now it is 6.1!!! My numbers have been significantly better with most of the time under 100 and fastings 85-99 ??? I have dawn phenomenon and every 4 or 5 days it goes up 2 hr PP breakfast to 130's and once to 170. This is after eating 3/4 cup eggbeaters and a pinch of cheese, decaf coffee 2 splenda packets every single day no diet change???? I work out 5-7 days a week 30-60 min. moderate. Do you have any thoughts or advice??? I am baffled and Endo. said maybe Janivia if I get to 6.3. ??? I am really really diligent so this really knocked the wind out of my sails.

Hi Jenny,
You responded to my post - Ice Cream Anyone???

I just researched some stuff for a friend, and I came across this ice cream in 2008. After talking with the founder and looking up/ researching the ingredients I thought it would be a good, yet little known product to share on this site.

You mentioned maltitol and its laxative effects as well as the fact that it does raise blood sugar levels.
Here are a few things I found. Please let em know what you think. Isnt the increase in blood sugar for maltitol less than that of pure sugar? Also the maltitol in combination with xylitol as the effective sweeteners cut back on the laxitive effect if the ice cream was sweetened with maltitol alone? I have been looking for the maximum intake amount of maltitol with out laxative side effects. Do you know where I can find that info?

By the founders admission, formula for Clemmy's Ice Cream was made to maximize the taste and retain as much authentic Ice Cream flavor as possible, while catering to a diabetic life style. If it were up to you and you were making this ice cream what would you have done differently?
What sweeteners would you choose?
In general what is your favorite sweetener and why?

Thanks in advance for answering my questions. I am just trying to get some help and input, so I can give help and input.

And I really like your website. I am an info junkie at heart and I am loving your resources.

Hi Jenny,

I took myself to the hospital when I was diagnosed. I had the typical symptoms of diabetes. I had no idea when I got to the hospital that I would be diagnosed with diabetes though! When they tested my sugar it was 22 and I was diagnosed with DKA. I was 31 years old 5'6 ,135lbs.

My Dr. has done three c - petide tests on me. the last one in March was 314 but my sugar at the time was 6.4mmol/l.

I just found out about antibodies and getting tests to determine LADA. I asked my Endo to test for my next blood work session.

Jenny you really peaked my curiosity regarding hormonally mediated insulin resistance. I have never heard of this, can you send me a link or tell me a little bit about that?

I am very sensitive around my ovulation cycle. When I was on Lantus I made a chart of the daily changes of my dosage over the course of 4 months. That really helped me out but it was crazy how often I had to adjust dosage..from 1 unit to 11 in a month.

That's why I like the Metformin it's working so well I don't have to take Lantus at this time. Now it's less stress on me. That's why I am scared that Metformin's side effects might take me off of it all together.

I will wait a few days to see how I feel. Your right I might just have a mild urinary tract infection. I need to chill out. I guess I'm scared of drugs being a very holistic person.

Thank you,

Nadia

Hi Jenny,

I have been following your comments on the Tudiabetes forum for over a year and I have found a lot of your advice very helpful.

I have a few questions for you if you have the time.

I was diagnosed over a year ago with type 1. Soon after I started to honeymoon. For six month just 1 unit of lantus and a bit of fast acting..depending on my ovulation cycle. In the last 6 months I stated to really yoyo. My A1c is always around 5.5 but the yoyo is the amount of lantus throughout the month. I went from 1 to 11 units over the course of the month. My endo thought it would be best for me to switch to Metformin. I was reluctant at first because I am against drugs if I can including pain killers. After a lot of research I decided I should try it because it could really reduce my yoyo situation and I could be physically active more easily.

I have been on the Metformin for a month now. At first I had the usual mild side effects. Then I felt amazing!! In the last week I have been feeling really badly. It stated out with intense frequent urination then a migraine the next day, Then intense nausea. Today I decided to cut from the 1 tablet a day to 1/2 but my sugar is creeping up. I felt good though. I went back on my regular dose but I am a bit freaked out. Any tips or thoughts. I've made an apt. with my family Dr. to have blood tests done.

Thanks,

Nadia

BEWARE: Acai Berry Scamsters Latest Marketing Tricks

I got an illuminating email today from someone posing as a reader of my blog offering me, for free, an article about the benefits of acai berry and asking that I put it on my blog within the next week. The article which was nothing but a sales pitch for this questionable miracle cure product was included in the post and is now in my email spam bucket.

These are the same people who have put a lot of fake blogs all over the web where people recount their miraculous weight loss with this same prod… Continue
