My plans are about the same! I don't know too much in the area happening, but I was thinking to just post my blood sugar and maybe write a blog post. Seeing the bikers off (and wearing BLUE) sounds like a good idea too though! You can also make y...

Actually, I can't "play any sport (I) want." In addition to having diabetes, I have severe asthma and can't play most sports. I can't do most kinds of physically strenuous exercise.

I know quite well how to convert. I am usually the one telling other people. I just think it's funny that all the commercials on U.S. TV show meters with "100" as a result.

Yes, I am well aware of what is normal. However, I am used to thinking in mmol/l. So when I see one of those commercials that shows a number 100, to me it looks like it's 10.0.

The Carnegie Library (silly that they call it that; it's been a bank for years) is a JDRF thing just like the Blue Bridge was last year. I was unaware of the hoop-la at the university, but that would be for university students. I will probably g...

I have absolutely nothing to do for WDD this year. There's a bike ride happening Saturday morning, but I have been unable to ride a bike, due to my asthma, for the last eight years. The JDRF is having a building light-up ceremony, but their emai...

World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day is the day after tomorrow, and I have absolutely nothing to do.

Last year I was at school, and I made a display on the bulletin board and asked my classmates to wear blue. Few of them did, but at least I was able to do something.

This year it's on a weekend, and I'm not at work. I wasn't at work all week, due to the Remembrance Day holiday. (We always get a week off -- without pay -- when there's a holiday.)

There's a Big Blue Bike Ride on Saturday morning, but I can't ride… Continue

Haven't been around much lately

I haven't been around much lately. I leave for work at nine in the morning and get home at ten at night -- sometimes even later -- and that doesn't leave much time for the computer, or for anything else!

I saw Dr. Miller on Wednesday. I asked him about getting a flu shot for H1N1. He said that I don't have to get the vaccine, but I am in the "recommended group" for getting it. It sounds like it's more even more of a danger to my asthma than it is to my diabetes.

He gave me a new insulin… Continue

Frozen entrees -- argh!

I don't do low-carb. I don't avoid bread, cereal, pasta, rice or fruit. I will occasionally eat pie or cake or cookies, but not very often. I simply try not to overdo the starchy foods or the fruit, and I allow myself 'treats' like pie or cake only once a week or so. I try to read labels where I can so that I know what to expect from the food I eat.

One problem I have is that I don't like to cook all that much, so I tend to eat a lot of packaged foods. Now that I'm back at work until the end of… Continue

Adults and the JDRF

I was getting excited about attending the AC Cyclebetes wrap-up party at Willows Beach at the end of September, until I realized it was a JDRF-sponsored event.

I have what you might call "issues" with the JDRF. When they first started a chapter here in Victoria, I was enthusiastic about volunteering and working with them. This was until I started attending some of their events.

"We're here to raise money for the CHILDREN WHO HAVE DIABETES!!!!" was the rallying cry at these events.

"Think of a… Continue

I have been very lucky with Joshua, (my cat). I can show him the syringe and he runs and jumps up on the couch and sits down with his neck toward me so I can give him the shot. He somehow has figured out he feels better when he has it. The only time I have a problem is if his sugar gets too high, then he bites. He gets cranky. and lately his blood sugar has been continiously rising and I don't know why. In the last few weeks 260 up to 512. Doing a bg curve tomorrow and then going to ask the Vet for Lantus cause the other isn't working. I heard Lantus doesn't last very long, do you end up throwing out a lot of it?

Oh - I want to kidnap your beautiful pusscat! Too bad you live on the other side of Canada from me - you might not trust me if I lived closer ! BTW, I had a diabetic cat - called Beauduoin - he used to complain when his insulin shot wasn't for himself - since he associated the needle for chow time!!! Hope your pusscat is doing as well as mine did with having diabetes. I was using Lantus on him (same as what I used).

Hi Rainbow -- just read you're response to the "celebrity diabetics" discussion where you mentioned Bobby Clarke. I've played ice hockey for a few years (pre-pump, I can't figure out how to do it now- nor do I have the time or energy with a new child at home) and have always wanted to learn more about how he was able to handle it.

From what I gather, he didn't like to publicize the fact that he has T1, but I'd love to find an interview or article (or something) on how he was able to handle it, both mentally and physically. He'd be my "inspiration", so to speak, if I could find a bit of information to inspire me.

(Having lived in Philadelphia area from '92-'04, I question some of his actions as General Manager; but to play in the National Hockey League with Type 1 diabetes, and to play as well as he did, is truly remarkable).

Forgive me for assuming that you're a hockey fan. Just because you know about Bobby Clarke and live in Canada doesn't mean I should make such a generalization!

Sounds like you're much more adventurous with the carbs than I am. Good A1C though, same as mine 5.8. I read that you couldn't stand the brown rice and whole wheat pasta. There is a pasta out there called Dreamfields Pasta that has only 5 grams of digestible carb per serving. Check out their website. I tried it without using any Novolog (I try to not use Novolog at night) and it didn't spike the bs that bad. The red sauce probably did more damage than the pasta. And the real benefit, it tastes like regular pasta. Trust me I used to eat the whole wheat pasta before I got diagnosed diabetic, I didn't love it either. I got used to brown rice though, actually grew to be OK with it. Now I don't touch either though. Check out Dreamfields Pasta, the website will explain how it has such a low amount of impact carb.
