DiabeticizME My Story

My Story- I went to the Doctor's office in 2004; I had a yeast infection. The my Judy (Nurse Practitioner) asked, "Do you have extreme thirst, frequent urination?"; I had both. She said, "I bet you have diabetes...you are too old to have Type 1 (23 yrs old) and you don't fit the normal Type 2." She pulled out a meter to check my BG's (blood sugar), the meter read 454. I started to cry; my husband had just went to back to Iraq, what was I going to do? Judy put me on glizipized, did lab work… Continue

Steve RRR More Stuff in My Life (Part 2)

Our vacation plans have changed, as plans sometimes do.. Instead of a week in June in Nice, France, it is now two weeks in July somewhere TBD around Antalya, Turkey. I got a Hep A vaccine Thursday in preparation for the trip. Hep A vaccine is recommended by the CDC for travel to Turkey. Me being a bit immune-deficient (from immunosuppresent drugs), I did as suggested. My contact at the kidney post-transplant center said that this common vaccine is no problem to me since it is not a live virus.… Continue

Deborah Insulin Here I Come

My doc finally decided it was time for me to start using insulin (Humulin N). I wish I had started it a year ago when his substitute doc thought it was time for me to start using insulin. How much damage, if any, would have been avoided in that year? I suppose I'll never know. I had a one-on-one class with the diabetes educator at the local hospital to learn how to inject. I was given a free pen (thank Buddha - those puppies are spendy!), some needles, etc. I picked up my insulin and some other… Continue

Diana Changing the site

Yesterday was day four on the pump and the first time I had to change my pump site. I followed all the steps all 13 steps that is. Overall, changing the site was not bad. The worst part was taking off the sticky thing. Ouch! It hurt much worse then taking off a bandage. It felt like I was being stung. After the initial sting, I got all my prepping devices reservoir, insulin, prep pad, you name it was on my dinning room table. My pump consultant said it should only take me ten minutes to change t… Continue

Jenny A Mother's Day Surprise!

My grown up daughter who lives in California emailed me to make sure I was home yesterday before lunch time as something was scheduled for delivery. I figured she was going to send me something like the extremely cool fresh fruit bouquet all full of berries my son sent me for my birthday last year which they hand deliver. You can't see our driveway from the house, but I heard something drive up it (it's steep) and went downstairs, opened the garage daoor, and there was my daughter! Talk about… Continue

Merietta Can a type 1 and a type 2 live in the same household?

My husband was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I actually thought that this would make things easier on us because I wouldn't have to make two separate dinners for each of us. However, as I have begun to research things and have tried to create a good meal plan for both of us, I have found that this is way more difficult than before. For breakfast I love to have an egg with toast, some o.j., a grapefruit half, and some turkey bacon. Due to the cholesterol problem and type 2, my husband need… Continue

Sagwabetes alcohol.

i drank quite a lot tonight. my bloodsugar is about 500. this disturbs me because it doesn't feel too weird, just normal, but with the drunk part integrated. am i so assimilated to high bloodsugars that this should feel "ok" to me? i have a friend whose bloodsugar was 270 and it sent her into near terror and she went to the ER for treatment. what the hell is my problem? how can i be this out of control? sometimes i want to give up... or perhaps i just want to stay in denial. tmana Trying to Change Expectations, One Lancet at a Time

There are two sources for most of our expectations in life: experience -- both our own, and those related to us by others -- and our beliefs of entitlement. For example, we expect traffic to stop at a red light, because we have been told it is an expected behavior, and because we have consistently seen traffic stop at red lights. Because we expect traffic to stop at red lights, we often feel entitled to proceed without caution when the traffic light is green. Expecta… Continue

Jonah Day 6 on the Guardian

The Guardian, so far, has worked amazingly for me. I don't think it lags behind the blood sugar because if I eat a piece of white bread I see the number on my monitor go up within five minutes. I'm paying out of pocket for everything, so I'm trying to stretch out the sensor. The rule of thumb that the minimed rep gave me was that if the ISIG was below 6 when I get the Sensor End message, don't re-use it. So far the ISIGs have stayed well above 6. My blood sugar in the past six days hasn't been l… Continue

I'm still logging some miles for the 2008 Diabetic Runner Challenge. If you haven't signed up but like to run, jog, walk, or log miles on your feet, then I encourage you to sign up!! :) Since I last posted my miles, I ran the annual DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, which was great!! Anna WOOHOO!!!

So, I just got back from an endo, and I'm really excited!! My A1c was 7.2, which is a little high, but not nearly as high as it was a year ago when it was tested. I went to a Diabetes America place and it was awesome. The team there was great and I had no problem with them whatsoever. They were young too so I didn't feel like they didn't really know about type 1 or young people like I did the last time I went to an endo. They understood, and encouraged me, to change my insulin how I saw fit. The… Continue

Cherise How I felt when I was first diagnosed.

I was diagnosed on October 2nd, 2000. Its been a long struggle one that I sometimes want to give up on but I haven't yet. When I was first diagnosed it not only scared me but it also made me wonder how people were going to treat me. I was sixteen years old and in my junior year of high school. It was in October of 2000, the week of homecoming and I had been having some symptoms for over a week. My mom decided that I needed to get into the doctor's office and quick. I went to my primary c… Continue

Cherise Sharps Containers in Public Places, Especially at Colleges and Universities

I have been wondering this every since I started college again. I've noticed that public places, not like grocery stores or little stores with no public restrooms, but more like universities do not offer sharps containers for their diabetic students. I attend the University of Phoenix-Salt Lake City division in Taylorsville UT. There is two campuses that I have been for the UOP's campuses, one is the main campus located in Murray UT but is called Salt Lake City because its easier to find and the… Continue

Cherise Personal Weight Loss issues

I have had some personal issues with my weight. The last doctor's visit I had, which was on April 11, 2008, my weight had dropped from 145 lbs to 136 lbs. Understand that I am around 5'10" tall and the average weight for someone at that height is 150 lbs. I have no idea why I have lost the weight only that I have been eating small meals all day instead of three meals which is supposed to be better than three large meals a day. There are times that I don't get up until 11am, but get up at like 7a… Continue

Shannon How LOW can You Go?

I love my CGMS. I know I’ve said it before, but it’s now been almost two months and I can’t imagine life without it. That said, sometimes it really makes me angry. One of the reasons I got it (and paid the $1200+ out-of-pocket for it) was to help me catch impending lows (I HATE being low). Unfortunately, this is not where the Minimed CGMS excels. When I’m in the “normal” range, the results are fairly spot-on, but it completely missed the low I had yesterday afternoon. Usually, I’m very hypogly… Continue

I'm in my third year now, and almost done with the academic part of the program!!! The program got extremely hard during the summer of my second year. Diana Day 1 on Pump

so it is 2:00pm and I just finished my pump class about an hour ago. so far I like this little device. I was worried I would feel the insulin going in, but that's clearly not the case. I still feel pretty nervous with the pump. I'm worried I'm going to imput something wrong and have a massive sugarlow. I guess it's just a matter of building up my confidence with this little thing. Right now, I feel like this pump is the greatest thing ever, and I wish my doctor would have let me get on it sooner… Continue

faye from saline to insulin

I gave myself my last injection this morning. Had I remembered, I would have done a little dance...or a funeral procession. Hopefully the OmniPod works for me in the long run, but based on my blood sugar readings from today, I'm hopeful. I did a pod change over the weekend (saline), and surprisingly, it didn't take me too long. It took about 3 minutes (this was while doing a "demo" for my mom and boyfriend). My squeamish-around-needles boyfriend heard the click of the needle retracting and near… Continue

Chris Haro A month can make a difference...

I always heard that is takes 30 days to make a habit stick. I have to agree with this philosophy. On April 1st, I had my A1c done and it was a little high at 7.4%. I have since then made a lot of changes. I have been eating really well, eating quality protiens, low glycemic carbohydrates, as well as plenty of fruits and vegetables. I have also been hitting the gym, or finding ways to exercise at least 3-4 days a week. Has not been easy, but I am finally getting there. I have recently been using… Continue

tmana Thermoregulation issues: Flip side and flashback

I've come to a sketchy, off-the-wall, hypothesis that thermoregulation -- more to the point, recurrent drops in body temperature to near-hypothermic levels -- may be either a primary issue, manifesting in secondary hyperglycemia (aka diabetes), or a trigger for the expression of T1 or T2 diabetes. Since in most people, body temperature tends to drop to its lowest about 2-3 AM, the same time as the infamous "middle of the night lows", I further insinuated (but did not postul… Continue

tmana Is there a link between low body temperature, thermoregulation, and diabetes?

"The experts" say that by the time one is diagnosed with T2 diabetes, over half of one's islet cells have been compromised. "They" also say that our diabetes can exist in a subclinical state for years before diagnosis. We'll probably have to wait another generation or two for researchers to piece together the interactions of genes, environments, and triggers for all types of diabetes before clear paths of development emerge. Once that happens, hopefully we will be able to "catch and treat… Continue

Dana Clark Oh, the Lows of Diabetes

Last night I had one of those terrible lows... woke up and was in the 40s.... sweating and needing to get to some juice ASAP. This doesn't happen often but it does happen. I'm also dieting so I wasn't happy about "breaking the diet" and having juice and some toast with PB on it. Of course, I wanted to eat up the entire fridge because I was out of sorts. Jody Enough Carbs to get me through the day!

I'm terrible! During the last 6+ months I've learned a lot about the carb content of food. Somedays I eat a few more carbs than I should. Other days, I eat a lot less. I usually try to make "good choices", when it comes to selecting my "carb choices". Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm human, but I don't see myself sitting down to a HUGE milkshake. I'm terrible because I memorize numbers well. If I've looked at a food's carb content I usually end up knowing it offhand, the next time I have that food.… Continue

Jody Potlucks, parties, food

As a teacher there always seems some sort of "gathering" or potluck in the teacher's lounge. At the school where I had my long term position last year, and where I substitute most frequently now there are always frequent lunchtime gatherings. The teachers and staff stop me in the hall to make sure I'll be in the lounge and let me know I'm welcome to any of the "spread." Last year, I LOVED taking part in this. Steve RRR "Does it hurt?"

When I was brand new to type 1 diabetes so many years, the most horrible thing about it was that I hand to take shots and that the shots "hurt". Later on when i thought about maybe using an insulin pump, the most horrible thing about it was that I would be attached to this thing all the time. Today, i was waiting for my lunch at work to heat in the microwave oven. Someone asked me if I took the finger stick blood tests. They asked me if they hurt. From where I am nowadays, a question like that… Continue

faye OmniPod & saline

I finally received my shipment from OmniPod and had my pump training! As of 2pm PST today, I will have been on the saline-filled "real" pod for a full day. Setting everything up was surprisingly easy, but I can see why people are on saline for a week-- 1) you don't waste insulin, and 2) you don't kill yourself by overdosing on insulin! =P I have to be honest though, I did NOT know what to expect when I slapped the real thing on the back of my arm. Eating disorders and disordered eating are a greater issue among people with diabetes than we are often willing to discuss. Let's face it -- how can they not be, when our minds have to take the place of organs that mean as much to the body's nutrition processes as do our islet cells? After years of quiet silence, this issue is finally beginning to come out of the closet. Diabulimia has been addressed on… Continue

It amazes me how much of an impact an a1c can have. I was doing really well for a while. Had about a year of improving a1cs, and even got to 6.7, which was my best ever. My most recent one was a lot worse. I was not surprised, and could point to the reasons. But, even knowing the reasons, I still hoped that it would not be that bad. I've posted a comparison video between these two systems on my blog. It's also available on YouTube. For me, this small change is a big benefit. Follow the link to see Dexcom Open Choice video and commentary. Continue

Shawn ATL CGMS Flatliner

I was fortunate to have an insurance provider (United) that is pretty liberal toward CGMS. I have been type 1 for years and have not always taken care of my diabetes. I didn't think about it much and just went about my dail… Continue
