Pizza effect

How do you deal with the "pizza effect"?

Last night I ate pizza for supper. I took a little bit more NovoRapid than I usually do. My BGs were low-normal for the next couple of hours, and I went to bed. (Ate the pizza around nine, went to bed about eleven.) Woke up at three a.m. with blood sugar on the proverbial ceiling

I'm thinking that was really a case of bad timing; if I'd ordered the pizza earlier, and gone to bed a bit later, I might have still been up when my BG started to climb, and I'd have been able to take more Novo Rapid before it hit the ceiling.

(I'm on NovoRapid at mealtime and Lantus once a day.)

Try calculating the amount of NovoRapid that you need for the total carb amount and take 60% when you eat and 40% later (1.5-2 hours later). You should play with the ratios (75%/25%, etc) and the timing to find what is right for you. When I was on shots, I sometimes did three separate shots when eating pizza. It takes about 6 hours to digest for me. If I take it all at once, I usually go low before all the pizza has digested.

The best way I deal with this is to cut pizza completely out of my diet . I no longer eat it . I no longer eat alot of things including any sugar and a whole list of alot of other things . I find rather than deal with the whole more insulin thing and the 3 am highs just omit that food from your diet .

Sure, I don't recommend pizza everyday (for anyone, diabetic or not!), but we all have different approaches to our diabetes diet. Some people have managed very good control, while including pizza and pasta in their diet. Other people choose other roads, but I think that if you do choose to eat pizza and other hard to manage foods, it is good to experiment and get others' ideas about how to "minimize the damage" of pizza.

The first year after I was diagnosed, I ate nothing but healthy food. Broccoli was my idea of a snack. Eventually I drove myself crazy. I realize that other people could do fine and adjust to this diet. But it happens in our household (me and my husband) that I don't have time to cook dinner and we order a pizza. And I have now figured out how to bolus for this meal without hitting the "proverbial" ceiling. It's also nice not to feel like a sinner when I indulge in something that shouldn't be part of my everyday diet!

Hats off to those that keep a constant low carb diet! Someday I might... but for now, I'm learning how to control my blood sugars while eating carbs. So far so good... and I hope to get better!

I don't think I should deny myself something just because I have diabetes. If that were the case, I'd probably have given up and killed myself long ago. Either that, or I'd be "cheating" all the time, because like a lot of people, i have found that if I constantly deny myself things, I'm more likely to go overboard and binge on things that are unhealthy rather than have something in a small amount once in awhile. I'm on my 35th year of having diabetes, and I intend to still eat pizza once in awhile, and pasta, and potatoes, and white rice, and bread, and even cookies and cake and pie.

I don't blame you about the pizza cravings. Besides my being diabetic, my daughter is wheat and gluten intolerant. So we still have pizza every so often, but without the crust. I make a whole pizza of toppings and the sauce and we still get to have our pizza. I don't miss the crust anymore because I know she can't have it and my blood sugar doesn't go nuts with just the toppings which is my favorite part anyway. This is just our way around it. Whatever you decide for you is up to you.

Pizza...yummy!!! I think I figured out the whole thing with it...either eat it in the afternoon for lunch and walk it off or adjust your insulin like Kristin said.

As recently as a couple years ago I either didn't have a problem with pizza, or just didn't notice the delayed peak it produces. But those days are gone... Tried making tortilla pizza, but that wasn't so good. I have found that if I go thin/extra thin crust then it's okay. Even found a couple frozen brands marketed as thin/extra thin that work.

I find if I go with thin crust it works well for me too.. I usually only eat cheese or veggie pizza also and find that it works much better. As for tortilla pizza, that works for me if I use the low carb brands. I have also found a flatbread that is slightly thicker and bigger than the tortillas with about 5-7 carbs per flatbread. These also come in flavors such as sundried tomato and garlic, and roasted garlic..makes great pizzas! Unfortunately I can't remember the brand. (I'll post the brand name when I find these again)

I have read that the pizza effect is caused by the high fat; the fat slows the conversion to glucose and therefore the insulin peaks before the glucose. I find that I have good results with "regular pizza" if I delay my injection (depending on my pre-meal BG) or split my dose.

A recipe I have tried is this:

Spread a little olive oil on a small tortilla. You can spread a little cheese on it after that ( I don't always put cheese on it here, so I can save a few calories, but I'm talking a very very small amount, so not a big deal if you do.)

Then I put a few slices of turkey pepperoni on it, along with lots of veggies (red/green bell pepper slices, mushrooms, a few olives, etc...)

Sprinkle a little cheese on top. Throw it in the oven for about 8 minutes on 350.

It satisfies my pizza cravings and doesn't really shoot my blood sugars up - the tortillas is what you have to bolus for. The veggies and meat don't really count for much.

I also make tortilla pizzas occasionally. If you use low-carb tortillas, then it can be a REALLY low carb meal. Recently I have not been able to find low carb tortillas in the grocery store. But i have ordered them online.

Tortilla-based pizzas are amazing. Make a tortilla-based pizza, but with pesto instead of tomato sauce, some fresh mozzarella and slices of tomato. YUM.

Hi rainbowgoddess; I have been type 1 for almost 31 years and I have found that pizza has a bad effect on my blood sugars no matter what so I only eat it once in awhile and take extra Humalog to cover it
