Lesser Carb and my loathing of diabetes educator

I've been doing the low carb thing for a couple weeks now, it does ridiculous things to my blood sugar Basically, I've only really been having bread/pasta/cereal in the morning for brek and for the rest of the day, lunch and dinner, I'll be staying away from those things. I've been eating lots of fruit and vegetables, salads, lentils, chicken, beef, salami, nuts, yogurt.. Anyway, I've found I've only been needing to take 4 units of slow acting before bed and 1 unit of fast acting before my bre… Continue

HI!

Hi! My name is Catherine and I'm a type 1 diabetic. I was diagnosed on December 20th, 2007 - 4 days before my 18th birthday, awesome, I know! I'm in first year engineering - it's freaking hard but I like the challenge! I'm a pretty happy person, I laugh a lot! I'm the first person in my family to have diabetes so there's nobody I can really relate too and that's why I've gone to the internet to soak up as much information about diabetes as possible!

geo and petro are fine choices! there is a TON of work (right now) in Texas for piping/petro/chem types =)

carbs? yes I limit them. I have always believed in the law of small numbers which is: small number = small misake. Don't get me wrong - I just had a huge dinner with over 90 grams of carbs, plus fats like ice cream and steak. if it wasn't for my pump I would still be on a rebound this morning (btw I woke up with a bs of 117)

you're body doesn't need much insulin. when I am very active I need only a fraction of the insulin even when I am eating many more carbs. given your background in engineering: think of insulin as the fuel catalyst.

By my current degree I am a mechanical. I have been working more as a civil (material modeling and simulations) and if I ever write my thesis I will be a civil then. I loved school but I have to say the last year was the hardest. There are so many projects that you have to work on and you can't let them slide until the last week.

What kind of engineering are you studying?

hiya Catherine, 25/14% (I am sure you know 'cause of how sucky it can make you feel) is high but that's what got you to the doctor's, yea? no I don't think its abnormally high for a first dx. They didn't have good diagnostic equipment when I first went but i am sure I would have "rung the bell" on any machine they hooked me up to in 1977 (holy ^%$# that makes me sound old) no worries you can have any control you want to have. College was tough for me because I didn't want to miss anything, and I didn't... but whatever you decide to do it becomes part of your experience - and that's what you need for the future.

when do you have to decide on a discipline? what do you think you want to do? I know engineers in every field from electronics to construction to accounting/finance to a buddy of mine that sits in a dark corner and designs helicopter blade profiles. They never tell you in school that if you graduate - you can be hired by anyone basically to solve problems. I hope to be able to help you network! I am a design engineer and we build bio/bulk chem/pharm finishing facilities and labs all over the world, so I have made a few friends, here and there!

Hiya Catherine!! Thanks for stopping by the site. It really is just me trying to brighten up testing your bs! I hated that black bag...ick.

So that's what I came up with. Thanks for adding me as a friend! :)

Hi Catherine! you're lucky? maybe! A lot of poeple dxd with T1 go to the hospital because they are usually in dka and ready to die. If you catch it fast enough you don't actually have to go to the hospital =) I was so stubborn I was almost in a coma so I spent a week there... but that was so long ago.

hey good luck with your degree and of course I'll be your friend - anybody crazy enuf to go into engineering has to have the same sense of humor as me! make sure you have enough time to enjoy yourself in university too - you only go down this road once, wellll maybe twice (I failed college my first "try" - drove a truck in Manhattan NY for 2 years then went back - going back to school after a couple years of making mony is like breaking IN to jail)

all the best and I hope to talk to you again!

Hi Catherine! From your blog above I can relate a little with you but I was 15 and have graduated from college. I hope you do great in engineering! I love seeing other women choose this field.

haha oh ya first year engineering was rough, the trick is to find a good group of people to study with, generally when you get stuck on problems, having people around helps as someone is bound to figure it out, just do the practice questions before exams with other people is my advice. :)

And Im not sure why I chose electrical, I guess cause Ive always been good with computers and technology, what discipline are you in?
