The internet for support

I've never had anyone be understanding of the struggle i go through with my type 1 diabetes.
I am on this site and others hoping to get some sort of support and friendship to help me get through my limitations and manage my disease.
I was diagnosed at age 11. For over 5 years, i had severe gran mal seizures due to hypoglycemia. My solution when i left for college was to just let my numbers run high so myself and anyone else would never have to worry about it. my body went through DKA several times, and i am to the point (for the last 6 years) where being anything less than 200 feels "low" to me.
I am terrified of it. the seizures scarred me in a way that no doctor or nutritionist can relate to or empathize with.
I am now learning to be more aggressive with my insulin and treatments.
If anyone out there can relate, or can offer advice, or just talk about this.... i'm really laid back, funny, supportive... i'm here.

encouragement by phone

A couple of years ago, when i lived by myself for the first time, and was on a similar "take control" mission... i had a strategy, that worked for a couple of weeks. I would get a good reading and call my mom, just for the support, and to see how it felt nice to relay that information out loud, and she would give me positive feedback and i'd go through my day. Now, in 2008, with text messaging, i thought it might be neat to get a support network for myself by reaching out to someone on here. T… Continue

Proud of small victories.

I was pretty happy with myself today, and not because i obtained "normal" bloodsugars at all, but because i controlled what i ate enough to maintain pretty much a consistent range all day. Let's discuss: 7:05am 327 (30 units levemir, 5 units novolog + bagel w/ butter & sugary iced coffee) 9:41am 379 (cheese sticks) 10:12am 375 11:49am 405!! (5 units novolog + spaghettios) 12:22pm 389 3:26pm 303 4:33pm 297 (2 hot pockets) 5:10pm 353 7:55pm 442!! (5 novolog) + another iced coffee. (WHAT?! It… Continue

alcohol.

i drank quite a lot tonight. my bloodsugar is about 500. this disturbs me because it doesn't feel too weird, just normal, but with the drunk part integrated. am i so assimilated to high bloodsugars that this should feel "ok" to me? i have a friend whose bloodsugar was 270 and it sent her into near terror and she went to the ER for treatment. what the hell is my problem? how can i be this out of control? sometimes i want to give up... or perhaps i just want to stay in denial.

hypochondriac

my doctor the other day told me that i have at least a few more years of horrible control like this before i see major complications. i am constantly thinking that every little pain i have is a stroke, that every blur of my vision is my eyes going blind, that it's all falling apart... and i wonder how much more my body can really take before i get better control.

Hey

it sounds like you're doing pretty well with your more aggressive approach. I really do hope things start to get easier for you.

Good morning,
Wanted to stop by and say hello and hope that you are doing well. Would like to talk to you sometime about diabetes since i am new to this and all. My blood sugar when i went into the hospital was 600 and i had DKA. So i know what you mean when you said that you had it. It was super scarey and i lost 45 lbs and i was down to 99 lbs and i was 5'8 . But since i have been home my blood sugar has been average of 120 so ok. But it has also dropped several times as fast as low as 35. Anyways enough about me . If you would like send me your email address and we can chat that way.

samcfitch@gmail.com - Hope you have a great easter!
