About Us...

My daughter was diagnosed on Feb. 8th 2008 with Type 1 D, Kacey is 11 years old. We brought her to the doctors because she was sleeping and drinking ALOT. They sent us the ER and then ICU, we spent days in the hospital getting KC well and learning, learning, learning, BS, shots, carb counting and supplies....It has been a little over a month now and we are coming to a new normal. We are now waiting for our next appointment to talk about the pump. Which we wish would come sooner than later. So much to live and learn at the same time. Kacey is on Novolog during the day and Lantus at night.

Hello Micky:

Quite recently, I was asked "...IF I WAS SANTA..." by several of my really young students. I always dress is white, and am not like a bowl full of jelly (by any means)... Only when I realized my goate was coming in awfully white
Did I finally put two and two together.... Playful Sigh

Honestly, it's too hot! LOL I had a few problems with my pump because I was out of work for 7 months just a few months after I got it. Luckily, my endocrinologist was amazing, and gave me a HUGE box of an older style of sets to use until I got insurance again. Then all I had to deal with was paying $98 for a bottle of insulin....

Hi Micky, My daughter is going to be 9 in about a week and we've been pumping now for almost a month. So we are new to this. We are using the MiniMed 522 and so far so good. We've used the silohuette infusion sets but she still has good and bad days with insertion. I'm sure it's just an adjustment. I'm sorry I didn't respond right away we are currently out of town, the pump has been a real blessing while traveling, we can be more flexible about when and what she eats and alot more spontaneous in general. Overall the pump has been a really good thing even though I still feel a little dumb about what I'm doing and troubleshooting situations that are new.

Glad to hear that you are adjusting to the pump and trying out different things.

I'm doing pretty well. I have been really busy with work and my research (I'm doing a phd in political science and working part time at a research center). When I am busy, I don't have time to cook. When I don't cook, I do "carb guessing" instead of carb counting. And I notice that my control is worse.

I just spent the day cooking food :) So I will have healthy meals that are easy to carb count this week!

I'm going to see the endo in July, I hope and I REALLY hope that my control has not gotten worse. I've been devoting a lot of time to diabetes care this year (which was LONG overdue). So I'm hoping for good results!

Keep in touch!

Hi Micky! I hope that all is going well for Kacey on the Cozmo!

I saw that you wrote about pain while testing with her fingers. What lancet devise are you using.

I use the SOFTCLIX and love it. I find it MUCH less painful. Even after almost five years of testing, I am still able to use the lowest setting (so it doesn't poke too deeply). I poke my finger on the gentlest setting then rub the finger (they call it "milking") while pointing my hand down and I almost always get a nice drop. I prefer this to a deeper poke that automatically produces blood.

Poking my finger is mostly painful when I hit a place that had been used recently. This can really hurt! So try to rotate where you test it. Also, testing on the side of the finger is a lot less painful for me. You can test pretty close the the finger nail (but it is annoying when the drops go into the nail!!).

I tried alternative site testing and did not like it, as it was less accurate and harder for me to get a good drop of blood. Also, as I bruise easily I had polka dotted bruises on my arm. So I'm not a big fan.

Like everything else, you will find the habits and methods that work best for Kacey. At this point, it's important to try different things out to make it as comfortable as possible for her!!

Actually I had the same frustration with that type of infusion set-- it was TOO hard for me to disconnect. I like the comfort a lot and it is much simpler to disconnect, but there is a new one that might be easier to insert (inserting by hand can be hard for kids cause you need to push the big needle in manually). I'll send both links. The infusion sets should NOT make a difference for her blood sugars. She should use the one that is most comfortable.
Comfort
Inset 30

You can use any infusion set EXCEPT medtronic ones. The rest of the companies use a standard one (it's called luer-lock-- so just make sure that you always buy luer lock). You should be able to buy these from any major diabetes supplier. For example, I used to order mine from Edgepark.com (bad website, but good customer service if you call in). Your insurance company might tell you who to order from.

I learned a lot of my diabetes care from a girl at my college who was type 1 since childhood. She had the most responsible care of ANYONE I know. So I don't think that you can generalize. I'm sure KC will greatly benefit from the support she has and when the time is right, she will take over her own diabetes care completely. We all get burnt out, but we do take care of ourselves cause that what we have to do :) She should join online communities when she is ready... get to know some older kids or young adults who take good care of themselves. Support is key!

Good luck and keep in touch!

Hi Micky! I'm glad that the start went smoothly. Yes there are lots of changes!

I don't use any wipes. I found it made my skin dry. The tube going in does sting sometimes (othertime i can hardly feel it)--- I notice that it feels weird for a while-- like my skin is "getting used to it". Also I try not to run around right after I put it in cause sometimes if I move the wrong way it really hurts.

So it would be good to put it in at a time when she can keep for moving too much for 10 minutes. She might find this unneccesary.

Where did they put it in? They started me on my stomach, but I find that the upper buttocks is the least painful place to put it.

The Cleo was not out when I started on the pump. So I use the Siloutte Comfort infusion set, which I insert by hand at an angle. So not straight in. I have never tried one of the other infusion sets. When you order supplies, it might be good to order a few kinds of infusion sets so that KC can try them out. But I guess in the beginning it is good to stick with the Cleo!

Keep me posted on how you and KC are doing with the adjustment!
