Diagnosis...

I barely remember it, I was like 12 or 13 which is almost 20 years now. I was staying at a friend's house and woke up in the morning sick as a dog. I started drinking Gatorade and throwing up. Then I couldn't even stand, the second I stood up I couldn't see and fell over. I called my mom who came and got me and took me to the doctor's office up the road. It took everything we had to get me into the doctor's office, they laid me down, took some blood....The doctor came back, and I remember this "An ambulance is on the way, Todd's blood sugars are over 900 and he shouldn't even be conscious at this point. He has diabetes." Turns out I had Mono and Diabetes. Spent about 4 weeks in the hospital, back when they made you stay and learn all about the disease and what to do, and bam....life changes and you have a disease you didn't even know existed 1 week ago, and you'll never be cured....or will I?????

Almost Friday....

So I went to the Endo today, and I guess it went pretty well. I think I fall into this trap where I expect to walk in and get some revolution that will change everything, and it just ain't going to happen. I am going to have to make some real effort to get anywhere better. So, she had me adjust one basal rate in the afternoon, and that's it. My blood pressure was really high too, so I am hoping if I get my sugars down to a normal level regularly, then perhaps I won't feel like shit all of the ti… Continue

mellow wednesday...

So...let's see if I can keep this up for more then one day. Today was the day I get my kids back for a few days before I have the whole weekend to myself. Being a single dad of 3, I kind of enjoy the few days alone. I get to play the guitar and sing a whole song without being interrupted to see if one can have fruit snacks. Of course, the day they go to their moms' I want them back by lunch. Today was totally lame. I fasted last night so I could get my labs done, but I went to the gym late, lik… Continue

Just Tuesday the 20th

So...I am going to try this out. Personal therapy I suppose, don't know much about blogs or who would even read this. It actually reminds me of Doogie Howser a little. Anywho, I am at this point where I know I have to get my sugars under better control. I think I learned real early how to "get by" with Diabetes. It's even possible that along the way, feeling crappy became the norm. When I think about changing my ways, I get overwhelmed, I don't feel like I know what to do, it doesn't seem possib… Continue

Hey Todd, I've enjoyed your writings. It's amazing to meet others that experience and feel the same way we all do with the big D. I have two kids myself. I've had T1 diabetes since I was 25 (13 years now). It's interesting explaining it to the kids, huh? Anyway, nice to meet you!

Do you like the pump?

technology - I am a big fan. I remember my fastest insulin needed a 30+ minute head start before you could eat... what a slowpoke. I guess you used "Regular" in your pump then too? I can't imagine how hard setting up a basal would be without analog insulin.
