Upgrading to a CGMS

I have been considering and then putting off upgrading to a continous blood glucose monitoring pump system for over a years now. I'm getting great A1C1 results with my Minimed 515 and testing anywhere from 6 to 10 times per day. I have a number of basal rates programmed into my pump. One for sick days, another for normal days, another for really physically active days, another for the week before my period and another for the week of (too graphic for some? Well it's a big deal when your insulin… Continue

Sneaky Veggies.

I found out many years ago that I can get the family to eat a lot more vegetables than they realize if I sneak them into some meals. Here's the recipe for a mega-batch of very veggie & beef spaghetti sauce that I made last weekend. I cook it in two large stock pots on the stove. It can be changed to vegetarian by omitting the beef or exchanging soy ground round. In large pot(s) add: 3 lbs extra lean ground beef, browned well 2 lg cans diced tomatoes (28 fl oz) 2 tins tomato paste l lg can to… Continue

Slowcooker Beef Stew

It's still cold in the Yukon, and when it's cold out, the foods I cook tend to be those of the warm and comforting sort! Yesterday I made a large 5 qt slowcooker of beef stew, with dumplings. There is enough leftovers for dinner today and to freeze into individual portions for take-to-work lunches. It did warm up to 0 degrees this a.m., so I took the plunge and wore capris to work! Slow Cooker Beef Stew In a large slowcooker, add 10 cups of vegetables. I used what I had on hand: chopped… Continue

13 Bean Soup for the Slow Cooker

Easter is almost upon us, and if you have leftover ham to use up afterwards, this is a great way to use it in a slow cooker. The recipe is from Bob's Red Mill website, with some adjustments. It's another family favorite, and is especially welcome in March in the Yukon, when we are still under a big blanket of snow. I usually serve it with fresh, hot whole grain bread and tossed green salad. 13 Bean Soup – Adjusted for the slow cooker Ingredients: 2 cups 13-Bean Soup Mix 1 ham hock or l… Continue

Sunday Dinner with Family and Friends

We had company over for dinner on Sunday, so I made a family favorite: Chicken Marabella with Mediterranean bean salad and tossed spring salad. Is there any better way to enjoy the company of family and friends than around food? I suspect not :-) .Because I had a couple of glasses of wine with the meal, I decreased my insulin bolus about 15%. Chicken Marabella is a great recipe from The Silver Palette Cook Book. It is one of those never-fail easy dishes that always is a winner for entertaining.… Continue

hi maureen,
thanks for adding me to your friend's list. i thought it stayed cold where i live. i think you have me beat. i live in ny about two miles from lake erie about half way between buffalo, ny and erie, pa. it's more then cold enough for me.
i've been checking out your recipes. i love the bean soup, i'm the only one in my family who will eat it though. no problem, i'll make it and freeze it in small bags. just like my pea soup. i know i shouldn't eat peas, but i love it and i make sure i don't eat any other "starch" along with it. as long as i do that i don't see a rise in my sugars. i was just going to tell you to have a nice memorial day week-end. silly me. i don't think we share that holiday, do we? lol!!

Thank you for your comment. I can tell the pros out weigh the cons. I'm going to try the pump out. I should get it in a few weeks.

Thanks for the welcome. I have to admit that now that I’m on the “meat wagon,” I am starting to understand the allure of certain meats but I’ll always be a smart-dog eater. It’s a texture thing ;) Btw…I’ve been meaning to try the irish oatmeal and LOVE your idea of doing it in the crock pot!

Hi Maureen:

The Yukon is not as big of a secret as you think.
We all know about the Canada Winter Games and
the aurora borealis and Famous People such as
Pierre Berton and it's Great history. Certainly a
part of Canada to be proud of. I was going to add
the Canadian diamonds also but that's next door
to you at the North West Territories, eh?. Shucks

You best be careful what you say. You may find
me on your front porch some morning. I hear that
it's gorgeous up there. :o)

I hope that you are doing Well Maureen.
