A little about me...

I found out I was diabetic in 1996 when I went to my OB/GYN to confirm my pregnancy (my beautiful daughter is now 10!). Fasting 280, put on insulin that very day.... So there I was, pregnant, emotional, and felt like the bottom had dropped out!

The past decade has been a struggle, as I've gone through all the "stages" at some point: anger, denial, acceptance, more denial, frustration, etc. ... including a year and a half in which I just pretended I wasn't diabetic and refused to take any medications at all!

Well, a 10.4 A1C and triglycerides over 1700 (plus a BP of 180/100) threw a bucket of cold water on all that about a year ago. Since then I've been working (as hard as I can handle, anyway) to get myself healthy, and stay that way, for my daughter's sake even more than my own.

The most important thing to me right now is to model proper diet and nutrition and a healthy attitude toward food, exercise, and body image for my daughter. I'm pretty sure she'll end up diabetic eventually, but my goal is to keep her from developing Type II before 30 like her mom did...

Down from 7.1 in July!

I'm really happy (and proud) about my latest A1C number... 5.6, down 1.5 points in about 2 1/2 months! I feel like I'm doing much better overall, but I'm still going through a daily roller coaster with my numbers: fasting over 100, then low 60s before lunch, only to shoot back up in the 180s at dinner. I'm waiting (not terribly patiently) to see an endo (first visit, haven't seen one since 1997 -- several moves, denial, laziness, etc.), but my September appointment was bumped to the end of Novem… Continue

For about six years now...

Seriously, though, I'm a PhD candidate in Theatre (technically) but my focus is more in media and performance. I'm working on the idea of a "virtual actor" on stage, using artificial intelligence to interact with other actors just like a human would. So that means that I get to play with animation and robotics as well as theatre!
