Our Journey Begins...

My family and I came to live in the UK three years ago. September last year our 9 yr old son vomited on the Friday and by the Tuesday was lethargic. It was hot here so did not think anything of his drinking lots. We noticed that he had lost lots of weight. Early Tuesday morning we got him into see the doctor. She took a look at him and then said she wanted to do a blood sugar test. I was then told he had diabetes and to take him to the hospital. That was the start of our journey of living with diabetes.

Life is Crazy

I sit here, BLOWING my healthy eating with a tub of GU double chocolate ICE CREAM, wondering "Is this really my life?".

I aspire to be so much more. Everywhere I turn there are oceans of PEOPLE. Each and everyone trying to carve out a life in the time frame they have been given. Some content to being just as they are. Others rebelling the system of right and wrong. A small amount forging their way to financial success. Others in decline and bent on self destruction. If life were a TRAI… Continue

Hey Vonda,

Controlling the A1C is easy; it’s all about eating right, exercising daily and making sure you take your insulin. I have a secret that has been the key to my success and that is truly exercise and making sure I eat every four hours. I don't eat a large amount of carbs at night and my insulin intake per day is minimal, which minimizes any hypoglycemic episodes and helps with diet management.

Let me know if you need any help, I can provide any insight to help with your diet management.

Have a great weekend,

Hi Vonda,

I'd like to invite you to join the parents of kids with type 1 group (click on groups above)

My son, Riley, was diagnosed when he was 3. He is 5 now and on an Animas insulin pump.

Thanks Bernard!

Can I take it from the photo that you do snorkeling/scuba diving?

My husband and I use to go out when we lived in NZ. The spear fishing was great!

Hi Vonda

When I got diabetes at age 15, I was the same as your son. No sign of the disease in my family, it was a BIG shock. I was diagnosed while I was still living in Ireland. Now I live in the US.

I think you'll find a lot of support here at TuDiabetes. Check out some of the groups. I know there's a large one for Parents of Type 1 children.

Thanks Luis for the link to the tips!

My son has diabetes. No one else that I know of in our families has type 1 diabetes so it came out of left field for us!

Thank you both for your welcome!

Love the treatment you did to your photo.

Who is the person with diabetes in your life, by the way?
