Hi everyone. My name is Angela Price. I am married to Dennis. We live out in the country near Woodstock, New Brunswick in Canada. Dennis has been a type 1 diabetic since he was 14 years old. Our son David was recently diagnosed with type one in March. He is 3 1/2 years old. I was diagnosed with type 2 a month ago. Diabetes seems to permeate our worlds right now.

Dennis uses Humulin N and R. David uses Lantus and Humulog. I am trying to lose weight!

I babysit children in our home so that I can stay home with David. I was very glad we made that decision when David was diagnosed. I can't imagine sending him to daycare now.

Before I had David I taught at a small private school. I started teaching upper elementary and finished at the kindergarten level, which I loved. I also spent a year teaching at a Missionary Kids school in the Philippines. It was a wonderful experience.

Now I have even smaller kids! I am cutting back on the number because the stress involved in taking care of David added to by the purchase of a puppy by my husband was causing near insanity on my part.

That is a bit about me. I can't wait to get to know some of you!

Started Lantus and Humulog

My husband made the switch. What a difference! He has lost 10 pounds in a month because he is no longer feeding the insulin. He wished he had done this a long time ago! So many less lows as well. I am so happy with the improvements.

Switching to Lantus and Humulog

We do the switch this weekend. the diabetic nurse said that before my husband Dennis can get a pump, he must have his glucose levels under control. I am happy about this but a bit nervous about figuring out the amounts. Den gets mad when he is high so I hope it doesnt' take long to figure out.

David's levels had leveled out, but I am beginning to wonder about the honeymoon getting less as his morning numbers aren't as low as they used to be, but I haven't had to feed him in the middle…

Good Numbers!

We finally have some diluted humulog and we are seeing much better numbers!. I can actually count carbs and try to figure out ratios! We have had two days of numbers within range except at night. It feels so good to finally see good results. I know it will constantly change, but at least I have a starting place. Yippee!

2 appointments today

Well we had the assessment for a pump for my husband today. We met a nurse at the diabetes clinic in Fredericton and found out that Dennis still has to get an appointment with the endocrinologist in order to get a pump. Hopefully due to the hypoglycemic episode he had while there, he will get an appointment soon.

The nurse said she thinks Dennis is having lows in the night and his liver is kicking out sugar and then he is rebounding in the morning so we will start checking at night for…

Pump Decisions

We finally got the call for an assessment appointment for my husband to get a pump. He goes the 19th to be assessed. There is a two week practice run and then he is on a waiting list to actually get to start because there are so few people around here that are trained to help.

Now the decision is to be made on what type of pump to get. I have been asking questions on the CWD website and reading so much info. It is really down to Cosmo or Minimed. Whichever one we get we

HI Angela:) Great to hear from you! homeschooling is rough today... sigh. It's rainy and the kids just dont want to work. LOL! I've a card up my sleeve for days like this! It's called unit studies and computer generated academic games! (hee hee! I'm smart about some things.LOL!) Let's try to meet in the chatroom sometime that would be good for you.

I can't even begin to think of everything she did. Funny enough, she used to drive me CRAZY always wanting to know what my bloodsugar was. However, her being on top of me was definitely the best thing possible. Just know that even if he ever gets irritated, it really is the BEST thing for him. She also prayed with me all the time about it. Any time I would get frustrated, she would listen and talk me through it and then we would pray together. She also never let me see her upset. I later learned that she would get really upset and cry a lot. But since I never knew about it, I saw her as being totally confident that everything would be ok. Her confidence, reassurance, and prayer have done so much for me. I'm going to try and get her to sign up on here. Maybe she can help you a little. I just know that you are by far going to be the best thing in the world for David.

I'm sure he will rebel... He already does about some things....

I would definitely say that not remembering life before D is better. However, you might want to keep in the back of your mind that he might hit a rebellious streak. I certainly went through it. However, my mom was amazing and she helped me get through it while still being careful about my diabetes. Good luck!

Yes, we love the Cozmo! If this is any kind of endorsement ... if I got D tomorrow, I would immediately get a pump and I'd ask for a Cozmo. I also really liked the Minimed and would've gone with them if we were going to do CGMS, but we can't afford it and my daughter doesn't like the idea of another site.

The best things about the Cozmo for us are the weekly schedule feature and the reminders. It has missed meal bolus reminders, low cartridge reminders, set change reminders, you name the reminder and it has it. And if you want you can customize up to eight of your own reminders! Get this, we use her pump to help her remember to take antibiotics and other daily meds!

The weekly schedule also totally rocks because you can schedule in different basal temp rates for different activities ahead of time. Then at the time of the scheduled activity the new basal rate automatically kicks in, you don't have to remember to change it!

It also has hypo manager, which suggests the amount of carbs you should eat when your blood sugar is in danger of going low or is already low. I really love this pump! The one major drawback is that the software that comes with it is not at all good compared to the other pumps. So if you want to download your pump data and get charts and graphs and stuff you can't do it. You can download the data and get reports, just not the graphs. But, one positive about the software is that it has a huge food database and the ability to customize the database. So you can keep track of carb content for almost any food you would ever want right there on your pump!

Anyway, we absolutely love it! If you end up with any specific questions about the Cozmo or pumping, please feel free to ask!!! I remember I had a ton of questions before we decided on a pump. :)

Angela,

I'm so sorry you're sad right now. But, I've been right there with you before. Just so you know, I did a lot of crying in the beginning and had a lot of sad days. But, now, Riley has had D for 20 months and those sad days aren't there anymore. To see how it is for me now, you can go to this post (http://threeyearsfree.blogspot.com/2007/06/no-more-gray.html)

And, I understand about those tiny doses. Life became much better when Riley got on the pump. He went on it 5 months after he was diagnosed and it's really been a Godsend.

Anyway, I'm thinking about you and sending you a (((big hug))).
