This is not a happy gee-isn't-diabetes-great post, so the 'happy police' can turn back now ;-)
I was watching coverage of the EQ in China and was again reminded that no one's going to pull a type 1 diabetic out of the rubble after 5 days. Well, unless they're trapped relatively unharmed in a void/dead space and have a vial with enough left in it within their reach and some way to inject it and figure all this out in cramped quarters in the pitch blackness. I would guess that being

My mom and sister needed glasses from the time they were little kids. My dad needed glasses by the time he was in his early 30's. My vision was always fine and, from the age of 16 or so, we had no health insurance. I therefore didn't see an eye doc from the age of about 15 to... well, for years. I never had a problem, usually had no insurance, wasn't diabetic and so I never went to one.
Well, at age 30 I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (in 2002). In early 2005 I finally went in for…

I found something very interesting. Labs can differ a bit from one to the next, but in the US I never found much of a difference. Have you? Well, there's certainly a difference between the usual lab value in Germany versus the one in the US. In fact, there's a major
global problem with lab standardization, yet everyone is still running with the "under 7.0%" target. Under 7.0, though, means something different depending on where in the world you are.
If you search online you'll fi…

Well, I perhaps owe the Ascensia Contour meter an apology. It was actually closer to the lab (remember all tests, including via lab were done through fingerstick, nothing through venous draw) than the Accu-Chek. I mean, technically either of them would be accurate enough, but the Ascensia was closest. So why are my a1c's freaking crazy? Aha. Well, that's easy to see now.
Since moving here I've had my quarterly blood draw done at my primary care doc's office (where they also test thyroid…

So I had the weird all-day appointment yesterday. They took a new a1c and blood from my finger 5 times throughout the day. A LOT of blood, too. Ouch. They filled these weird little cannula-like tube things each time with about 10 drops of blood (eek!) and I tested from the same finger with the Ascensia Contour (which I think is wrong) and the Accu-Chek Aviva (which I think is more accurate). I have an appointment with the doc next Tuesday for the results. All I know is that my a1c's have

I am originally from the USA, but I am living in Hungary with my Hungarian husband. I'm on the national health insurance here, which is great most of the time!
I just checked an Symlin is actually available in Hungary, though I'm not sure if it is supported by national health care.... I will have to look into it.
If you ever find a c-peptide source, let me know!! I'll do the same!
Another American in the midst of Europe, like me! I have to go to Dortmund quite often as the company HQ is there...seems like a nice area and only a few hours away from me in Belgium...
Anyway, just wanted to say hi!
