Yes, I definitely love what I do at JDRF. Its an amazing experience giving families and adults w/ type 1 the opportunity to advocate for the cure by telling their story to the people (members of congress) who have influence over our national budget.
"Juvenile diabetes" is an outdated term that was replaced by the more appropriate term type 1, I believe in the 80's, so it is taking a while to sink into the public consciousness. Medical understanding of the various types of diabetes has increased dramatically in the last several decades mostly because of the funding and advocacy by JDRF and the ADA. JDRF has kept the word Juvenile in its name mostly for branding reasons and to a lesser degree because its the kids that motivate donors the most.
Type 1 diabetes has been increasing within the population over the last several decades, recently at a rate of 5.5% per year in the US. This is most likely caused by the unknown environmental trigger. The two fastest growing age groups being diagnosed are 0-4 and 20+. I believe about 40% of the people being diagnosed with type 1 currently are over the age of 20. I'll see if I can find the most recent studies on this.
Take care and just tell people that you were diagnosed w/ Juvenile diabetes at 35 because you're so young at heart.:)
You be well, now.....Judith in Portland
