Hold Tight or Open Up?

Another bit of wisdom from Oswald Chambers gave me choices to think about last week. He centered his thoughts on the example of David's decision not to drink the water that had been brought to him by men who risked their lives to get it. David, instead poured the water out while talking to God, expressing his thankfulness to God for giving him such men who would risk their very lives for him. The fact of his extreme thirst was not enough to make him take the blessing of the water and own it for… Continue

Devotion - To What?

This morning, the insights of Oswald Chambers meant a lot to me. He was discussing the words of Jesus in Luke 14: "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple." This saying of Christ has always been a mystery to me. Why would he want us to "hate"? It sounds like fanaticism on the surface. What Chambers said though seemed to get at the root of the matter. Jesus is pointing… Continue

Summer Mornings

I was blessed this Sunday morning by spending time on the seat of my bike, out in the Cathedral of my Creator's own Construction. The privilege of seeing his creatures, in their element, as if there were no human civilization for a 100 square miles has filled me up with praise, and truly humbled me in his presence. I am so glad to have lost an hour of sleep to experience these moments! God, You Are Good!

Colorado Winter Spring

Well it was a fine spring day in winter today. My wife and I jumped on our tandem bike and hit the trails for an hour after church this noon. It was sunny, nearly 60 degrees, and absolutely windless. The wind so often accompanies our warm winter days here along the Front Range, but this one was a beauty. Hopefully, the first of many more to come!

Thank you for the information on bike riding. I use a temp basal of 25% of my usual basal rate, test every half hour if I feel okay and more often if I don't and take plenty of carbs with me. I never ride alone and have learned to listen to my husband's wise advice because he makes better judgements about my care when we are bike riding than I do. I know God uses him in so many ways in my life and this is one of them.

Tom,
Thank you for your encouragement. I loved the devotion. I too enjoy God's creation from a bike seat. Are you able to manage your BGs while riding. I find it difficult but love the exercise of riding and the time with my husband.

Hi Tom. I just read your note to Kristin on the LADA forum. Your experiences and mine are remarkably similar so I thought I'd drop a note and say hi. You got me on your diagnosis #s, my BG was 500 and my A1C 13, but I was treated as a T2 for 4 months (until I got in to see an Endo) because I was 42. I did my own research when I was diagnosed and knew I was a T1/LADA within a couple of days, but that didn't disuade anyone until my Endo ran her tests. Anyway, you know the story. You lived it first hand too. Not that I wish the experience on anyone, but it is nice to know we're not alone. Take care.

Nope, I check on multiple meters and same reading. And one time I ate 30 grams, tested after 20 minutes, and was only 87. It's weird.

Hey Tom, good question. I haven't backpacked since I got my pump (previous trips I was on injections), but I probably will get out again this summer. If it's a challenging hiking trip (e.g. 40 lb pack, some hills), I"d probably drop my basal to 25% of normal and I'd test my BG every hour during the hiking. 25% is what I use for long-distance runs, which are probably about the equivalent of hiking with a pack.

Make sure you take plenty of fast-acting carbs (I like Starburst candies) in case you need them, and I'd recommend having something like Kashi granola bars (good mix of protein and carbs) for eating along the trail.

If you're not used to that level of exercise, the thing to watch out for is the delayed affect (6 - 12 hours after you stop hiking). Your BG may go low during the night.

So Tom, are you heading out our way this weekend? Hopefully your daughter is feeling better. I just saw this weekend's weather report and it looks great! No rain, no wind. Doesn't get much better than that!
