A Mother's Day Surprise!

My grown up daughter who lives in California emailed me to make sure I was home yesterday before lunch time as something was scheduled for delivery. I figured she was going to send me something like the extremely cool fresh fruit bouquet all full of berries my son sent me for my birthday last year which they hand deliver. You can't see our driveway from the house, but I heard something drive up it (it's steep) and went downstairs, opened the garage daoor, and there was my daughter! Talk about… Continue

Disturbing Experience: Wish We Had A Universal Diabetes Marker!

I was strolling through town on this beautiful afternoon. I poked my nose into a small coffee shop where I'd heard the governor of Massachusetts would be talking to people, and sure enough, there he was. He seemed very reasonable and human but there were so many people deluging him with demands I pretty much took a look and left it at that. On my way down the street afterwards someone called out at me. I ignored it at first, but the person called out again and I turned around and there was a la… Continue

Labs again

A1c down a smidgeon to 5.7% which is pretty much where it always is. Highest HDL I ever saw-76 and nice low TGs. Total cholesterol is high as usual, but it always is, thanks to my genetic makeup. I'm near the bottom of the normal range for Vitamin D so I'll be raising the dose. No fear of overdosing! The bad news is that I have had to stop taking metformin because it is doing horrible things to my stomach lining and nothing helps. But as soon as I stop the met, I gain weight. No matter what I… Continue

Got My First Proof Copy from the Printer

I'm sitting here looking at the beautiful 4 color cover of my Blood Sugar 101 book and I am thrilled with it! No matter how much time you spend working on a book, it is alway a shock when you hold it in your hand and it is a real, live, book. I've published seven books before this one, but this is by far the nicest looking. This is the first book I've ever done with completely electronic submission and I made the choice to use some ope… Continue

How ADVANCE differs from ACCORD

As you all know by now, information about two major studies hit the press in the past few weeks. One, ACCORD, appeared to find that lowering the average A1c of a group of participants to 6.4% slightly increased the cardiovascular death rate. The other study which lasted longer and enrolled twice as many people found that lowering the average A1c of study subjects to 6.4% resulted in no additional deaths. There's been a lot of speculation about why these two studies came up with different result… Continue

I was looking for diabetes-friendly widgets and came across a familiar face with an A1C calculator. Thanks! I think it's really cool. Had to add it to my blog.

Always enjoy your take on things in the forums. Thanks for being such an active member.

Hey Jenny, I just wanted to let you know that my doctor did lower all my medications including the Glyburide! My last A1C was 6.2 and the doctor was really happy with my results. Thanks again for all the advice!

Hi Jenny:

Don't be offended but I only normally read 2 People's blogs and comment occasionally on a few others on here...and yours isn't one of my usual. :P I did read one now though that lead me to your book. (Oh, I do think that you are a Smarty from reading your answers to everyone's questions, though). :D

I was wondering, since on your page you say you have an oddball Diabetes, then from what view of Diabetes have you written your book? Or is it from an overview of all types of Diabetes?(Good For You, btw). I am considering purchasing your book.

Jenny, thank you for commenting on the discussion about oral meds and insulin. After reading some more about type 1, type 2 and type 1.5, I really don't know what type I am. I am now thinking I might fall into the catagory of 1.5. I certainly am going to talk about this more with my Dr and ask for a recommendation to an Endo and get properly tested and diagnoised.
The last couple of days have been tough and my numbers just aren't making sense, I am currently working the night shift and for my dinner I had a lean cuesine (spelling) with 56 carbs my before reading was 99 and 1 hour after 174 and two hours after 144, I took 12 units of the novolog 70/30 I did however foget to take my glugophage. 3hrs after is 131.....anyways thanks again I really enjoy this sight.

Thanks for the comment. I do know about protein- I've been reading your blog for over a year. I think that you and I have rather different bodies. I did at one point try to count protein grams to see what happened but it didn't help that much. I wish the Guardian let me input my protein intake. I think that protein might affect your blood sugar more than it does mine precisely because you eat low carb; that because I eat fairly high carb, it doesn't do that.
One thing I claimed before the Guardian and that I've seen backed up is that I have only minor meal spikes when my insulin dose is appropriate. I do not feel that going low carb would be beneficial for me. I do think that keeping my meals small and my carbs spaced is much more important than limitting my overall carbohydrate intake.
I'm still a growing teenager and I'm not trying to keep my weight down and the whole low carb thing seems too much like its geared towards weight reduction and I really don't want to lose weight.

Hey Jenny...thanks for the tip. I am meeting with my doctor next Tuesday, so I will talk with him then about it. Thanks for all the advice, it is nice to get some good feedback from people who know what they are talking about!

Helo Jenny,

Congratulations on being voted one of TuDiabetes favorite members. Manny has asked me to send you a copy of my Diabetes Basics DVD as your prize. I apologize for the delay in sending it out to you. I hope the information given during the presentation and on my website (www.healthdoc.org) are helpful to you.

Thank you for the advice, Jenny. I will look into the appeals process options and see if that is a path that I can take.
