LIVING with Diabetes Contest Entry: Group 1

I am fortunate that I was always Jen first and a diabetic second. I have recently learned the words the endocrinologist said to my parents in the hall of the unit to which I was admitted with insulin dependant diabetes (IDD) were, “It is okay to cry, just don’t ever do it in front of your child.” Much to my 10 year old delight, a pretty blonde young nurse to come visit me; and she had diabetes. It turns out that you don’t have to be ugly just because you “catch the diabetes…

Well, I was denied a transplant because I weigh too much. After losing 70 more lbs then I can be eligible. That kind os is a bummer because all the memebrs of the team (cardio, neph, nutrition and SW) said what a perfect candidate I was. SW even basically said to me as I was catching the elevator that if it had been any of the other doc's from the transplant team they would have said yes. Booooo.

Hi Jen. I've had type 1 since Halloween week of the 6th grade. I had a living kidney transplant in Nov 2005. What are you thinking over getting transplanted? Kidney, pancreas. I know there's at least one person at TuDiabetes who had a pancreas transplant and at least one who is on dialysis.

Welcome to the TuDiabetes family, Jennifer! I think it'd be very interesting if you start a discussion topic on transplants to see what other members can contribute.

Here are a few tips on how to make the most of the site.

If you find the community useful, I'd be honored if you could link to us on your blog/site if you have one or invite family, friends, colleagues and anyone whom you feel may benefit from it.

BTW, if you know of any other folks who only speak Spanish, please let them know about EsTuDiabetes.com, our sister Spanish-speaking community.

I'm new here. I'm a nurse in a Neuro ICU. I have had diabetes since Easter Week of 5th grade. Next month I'm going for a transplant consult. I have thought about getting one for a while, but am still undecided about what my decision should be.
