Blogging about my type 2 diabetes (dx March 2005) and my husband's type 1 diabetes (dx March 1986) since November 2005, along with some cat pictures and recipes along the way.

I also write a column at dLife called Dueling Diabetes", which deals with handling two types of diabetes in one household.

Recently made the decision to go ahead with metformin after seeing some disappointing post-prandials despite following diet (mostly) and exercise.

Stress & diabetes

I hit a wall last week. I realized how much stress is impacting my blood sugar readings.

Taking 1500 mg of metformin a day isn't helping.

Following a strict 90 g carb or less diet isn't helping.

Exercising 5 times a week totalling 150 minutes or more isn't helping.

Balance ball & yoga isn't helping.

The only way out is to remove myself from a stressful work environment. I have requested a reduction in work hours. Besides the fact that I… Continue

The girlie side of things.

I wanted to believe that metformin would help with the monster PMS that has been occurring for the past 4-5 cycles. Feeling extremely depressed & anxious, I really wanted to believe it was connected to the higher blood sugars I'd been experiencing.

This is my second round of PMS with the metformin, though I started the met (and following deit and exercise more rigidly) around the time PMS began last month.

No relief. At all.

Week 4 - metformin

~5 lbs lost. Frustrating when I'm exercising 5-6 days a week and following diet (in fear of metformin side effects). Going to add more balance ball & yoga into the mix. I felt great after returning to my friend the balance ball earlier this week.

Post-prandials aren't AS bad (<200) as they were pre-metformin (>200), but they're not as good as I'd like. I know, I know, they say it'll be 2-4 weeks after I reach my target dose that I'll see results.

I'm wondering how mu… Continue

Week 3 - Metformin

The good news?

GI side effects have subsided, other than some heartburn and abdominal cramping when I eat too much.

Exercising as much as possible and definitely following diet.

The bad news?

I had one of those bad post-breakfast numbers again yesterday. I didn't get a fasting reading, but even despite a 25-minute elliptical workout before breakfast, I still managed a 255 about an hour after eating. (And yeah, I double-checked and got 247.) …

Week 2 - Metformin

Been on the 500 mg AM / 500 mg PM dose for 10 days now. Still having slight GI problems, but it seems to be getting better the past couple days. Yesterday, my co-workers said I looked better than I had in over a week.

Contemplating whether I need to increase the dosage or not. I will take a look at my numbers over the next week and decide. My endo's goal was 2000 mg daily, but 1000 mg seems to be enough. I wonder if the GI side effects have created decent numbers or if it really is the… Continue

Indeed I am-- finally. :-)

This summer has turned out to be a busy one -- among other things, more baseball than you can imagine (Joseph and Ryan are playing! :-)

I'll be interested to read of your experience with Metformin as that's what my recently diagnosed sister has been taking...

I wish that I could reduce my weight like you. I need some discipline. I am spoilt with all these fancy invitations to cocktail parties in London.

Just stopping by to drop off a Hello. This particular Hello has been very active and running around my office all day long.

I gave it an eye-dropper of gin. Hopefully it will calm down by the time it gets to you.

Oh my goodness, holy digression. Hi already! :)
