Using Humalog

I just started using Humalog and didn't really get any instruction on how to use it. I wasn't told to use it before meals or after. I was given a slide scale on the units to use. 0 to150-0 units, 151 to 250 3 units and so on. When I got done eating dinner tonight I took 3 units of Humalog and two hours after eating did my sugar and it was 199, OK, something is wrong here. What can I do or am I doing something wrong.

USING TWO TYPES OF INSULIN

I know that I may need to add another type of insulin to gain control of my after meal #'s. I have been researching Humalog and think that this may be the one to talk to my doctor about. Right now I'm on Lantus and Glucotrol XL. Can Lantus be used with Humalog?

Getting It Under Control

Yesterday I started something new with my insulin. I'm on Lantus and Glucotrol XL and right now I'm taking 32 units of insulin a day (or more) until I get my BG to where I want it in the mornings. I'm on a program called "Dosing & Titration." Basicly what I'm doing is adding to my insulin intake every week until I have my morning BG's where I want it. I research Lantus all the time so, I know that I am able to split my doses, do half if in the morning, six hrs later take my oral meds and…

Well, I think taking the first step and deciding to take control of your diabetes is fantastic! It takes time, but I'm sure that you will be able to manage it properly soon. Are you taking insulin shots? If you are, and you watch your diet and exercise properly, you can get decent control quite fast. I was put on insulin shots immediately when diagnosed and I got excellent control within two months. It eased the transition to Metformin and now my blood sugars behave 99% of the time. The 1% of the time they don't behave is when I go out and happily overdose on carbs. Good thing this does not happen too often! Anyway if you need any help, just shout. You can also drop me a message if you like. All the best!!

Angela, when Manny established TD he set up geographical "groups" so we'd get a sense of who our neighbors are. I am the administrator of the Great Lakes Group which basically means that I look at the new members and invite them if they live in Minn, Wi, Oh, Indiana, and Michigan. One of these days I'm going to group everybody by state and city too.
If you want to join, just click on the "groups" tab, find the Great Lakes Group, click and it will explain how to join.

Hi Angela,
Welcome to the tudiabetes.com family.

Here are a few tips on how to make the most of the site. I invite you check out the different groups; we have: there's an excellent chance you will find more than a few that you can identify with.

If you find the community useful, I'd be honored if you could link to us on your blog/site if you have one or invite; family members, friends, colleagues and anyone whom you feel may benefit from it.

Also, if you know of any local newspapers, TV or radio stations that you feel could be interested in writing about our community, please let them know about our recent Press Release, announcing the community: http://www.prweb.com/releases/2007/8/prweb546849.htm;

Last, if you run into Spanish-only speaking folks, please let them know about EsTuDiabetes.com; our sister Spanish-speaking community.

Once again, welcome to the family and we look forward to hearing from you.
